You don't even ever have to take that single day off. If you work an average of 8.75 hours per day, you can work 365.25 days a year...

Thats true. Point is you cant make them give you anymore than the law allows. There are no such regulations. If you are unhappy with the hometime you are getting, your only option is to find a company that gives you more.

These HOS rules go all the way back to the late 30s. Back then actually driving a truck was VERY labor intensive. The HOS rules were put into place to as you say protect drivers. However I feel that this should have some leeway in it. The 34 hour reset is a start. I am not a big fan of the 8.75 hour a day thing. For starters you have no leeway in case of a problem like a traffic crash or weather. Once that 8.75 is up you MUST go off duty. I think this should be up to a CBA in the case of a union and up to a carrier with some big time overtime for going over. Safety advocacy groups would never allow this I know. To be honest and at the risk of being called braggadocios I drove until I knew I needed to get off the road for a few days. I also knew when I had to get off the road after being up for a while. I do find it very interesting how all this is going to turn out.

Yea the 34 gives you a few hours longer at home/on break than the original HOS. Under the original HOS, You could finish up at 9pm on Saturday Night with 70 then they could shoot you back out at 12:01am Monday morning

If you're an OTR driver the company can and will keep you out on the road, away from home and away from your main terminal, as many days as they can. Days? They'll keep you out as many weeks as they can. There is no law against this. None.
Getting scheduled days off is a constant complaint from drivers...and with good reason. They have no protection under the rule of law from managers who keep them away from home.

What they can't force you to do is work more hours in a given period of time than the law allows. Thayt's where your HOS rules come into play. You'll still be running legally, you just won't be going home.

Welcome to trucking. It's a 7 day a week job for all the hours you can work/drive. Now you can make the big money. You get free heat and a place to sleep. Plus get paid to drive.

    You sleep next week.

You worry about the money and bills next month.

You keep going until you are sick of it. Then go take time off.

DO NOT let the dispatcher follow you home like Mother in law on phone. You finished with home time yet? We are waiting on you...

"Drive" being the keyword though "Sitting" is catching up fast!lol My rule of thumb was when "Sitting" required more hours than "Driving", it was time to find something else to do.

A long time ago a dispatcher patted me on the head and say quiet child, let the adults worry about when to send you to get this load today.

I exploded. That's just it. It's freaking 7PM been sitting since two am and you numb nut adults aint done a #### thing today for that truck or me. What's the matter with you all?

Silence in the dispatcher office 20 minutes.... finally the oldest one lost his temper and piped up who are you to talk to us this way kid....

I quit. It would take me years to discover that if I can find freight that you don't have to wait on all day you will make more money and be happy. AND to do that means I need loads coming out of my ears for weeks without even seeing that dispatch office.

You call the shots. If the company does not agree move to another company. I don’t work weekends, never have. My first 2 years on highway run way back was 3 15 hour shifts a week. It was awesome until a low bidder took the contract:(
