A bit about me: I retired from the Army in 2015. Right before retirement, i obtained my CDL. I am now a third generation truck driver. I moved near to Fayetteville NC and drove for a man who ran 3 dump wagons. We had a guy who would come on during the winter who ran containers out of Wilmington. In May of this year, once i had two years experience, i bought a 2011Volvo and leased on to a company. I am now usually among the top earners at my terminal of 28 drivers. Here is how i make out on average after six months. $1.50 per mile total gross on all dispatched miles, $1.40 per mile on all miles i have put on the truck so far (67,000). I am home 4 out of 5 nights per week, and only run Monday - Friday. The night i spend out is my choice, i don't have to, but do in order to turn 6 loads per week. My fuel costs are $1000 per week, and truck payment and insurances are total $375. I grossed $3400 per week average, including the week i was on vacation, and a few 4 day weekends. After all maintenance expenses, and other expenses, i have $43k to show for it. I think i am doing well for a home every night guy.

I have laid aside 35% of gross minus fuel for tax season, and have not filed quarterly, and feel prepared for April.

One major plus to the company I leased onto is our fuel discount. Fuel today across NC is between $2.116 and $2.454 for me.

    Thoughts?

Curious when you say you have $43k to show for your work. Is that your net income after expenses and before taxes. Or that is what your business. Has managed to save, or profit after paying all expanses including paying yourself?
Last week being the 48th week of this year.
I would say $43,000÷48= $895.83. As much as I would absolutely LOVE to be home most or every night. Couldnt afford it making that kind of money. Buy i live in new england and not N.C.

    .

$43,000 is net before taxes after all expenses. I paid myself out of that. That is for 6 1/2 months. (29 weeks)

What matters is if it works for you. I know guys who can gross $12k a week and that's the kind of money they have to make to make it worthwhile and guys who make the kind of money you make and are completely happy. At the numbers your showing your basically buying yourself a job. After true expenses and risk you would be better off with a good company job with the money your grossing ,and not have to worry about the hassle of owning a truck. That might not make you happy and owning your own rig and being home almost every night is more important . Also you are retired military (Thank You for your service), and having a military pension also supplements your income ,as the area you live in isn't a super high cost of living area,so you might be well ahead with your situation than a guy grossing a lot more . Pulling containers has never been a high grossing gig,but it usually will get you home everyday if you can deal with the hassles of dealing with the ports every day. We do $7k a week on average and home almost every night ,but our expenses are higher, and we run about 500 miles a day, grossing 107k lbs. only half the miles are loaded . I know car haulers that do well over $10k a week, but a lot more BS ,and equipment cost involved and not usually home evernight. To me being home every night (almost) is priceless , I want to see my girls grow up,eat dinner with my family at my dinner table, play with my Bulldogs and sit on my front porch and watch the sunset over our property with my wife..Theres no dollar figure that can replace that to me,but everyone is different and has a situation that works for them.

29 weeks? I saw you got out in 15. So I figured this was for all year. I had to reread your initial post. To see you started in may.

I looked into company driver rates and most are around $1000 per week pretax. Carolina is one, MCO another, and Hogans.
