Saw a few fatalities that year. Too fast coming down the steep grades on snow. I got rear ended that year on Pic River hill,,bull hauler following too close pushed another truck into my flatbed stopped for turning vehicle. Typical of bull haulers, still got to hold hands going down the highway, just like the camel jockeys.

Gunfights at fuel islands over stupid 30 minute Mandated "breaks".
idiots blowing through parking lots at 40 miles per hour trying to beat the clock , running people over ....
Real world doesn't fit a ELD.
NOW.... when we have some pretty good statistics for the whole year, there needs to be a class action suit against the government for compromising our safety!

The problem with a lawsuit would be explaining how you were 100% legal on paper all the time but now that it’s recorded electronically it’s a problem. We need HOS reform more than we need ELD reform.
And if you recall the mandated break came from a poorly worded aregument that was put out by OOIDA and others. When complaining about the 14 hour clock instead of fighting to be able to stop the clock for a break their argument was “now drivers can’t take a break during the day. They can’t stop to eat. Blah blah blah”. So the government mandated the 30 minute break. -
Mandate was sold to the public under the FALSE guise of increasing safety and decreasing accidents.
Had nothing to do with HOS the basis of arguement is the rate of crash is significantly HIGHER as a result of the mandate.... Because the HOS was there prior to the mandate.
There was simply no reason for this mandate to be forced upon the industry and the evidence is stacking against it.
Videos of unsafe behavior as a result of the mandate are everywhere, in addition to the truck stop shootings caused by the idiotic 30 min break.
They should rename it 30 minute Mandatory OK Corral training at the fuel island.
The government pimped the law on the industry under completely false premises based on increasing safety and decreasing accidents ...
So far statistically it has been a significant decrease in safety caused by this mandate.
Those who have suffered injury or financial loss as a result, have standing under the law to sue the government civilly. Class action.
It needs to happen.
regarding hours of service, it should be a 16 hour clock either on duty or off duty everything else needs to be thrown out.
Any normal person can work a 16-hour day there is no reason a truck driver should be discriminated against.
As a professional , anyone in the seat should recognize fatigue whether it's at two hours or at 15 hours.
What the idiot bureaucrats need to learn is that you cannot fix stupidity. Trying to cure stupidity is always worse than the ailment when it comes to the govt.Last edited: Dec 6, 2018

Once the FMCSA was told in 2012 to come up with an ELD mandate the ATA really started lobbying for it. The ATA has deeper pockets than OOODA, and there was basically zero participation from drivers at any of the listening sessions, so here we are.
A 16 hour day will never happen. The lawsuits that resulted in the current 14 rule had groups like Public Citizen wanting 8 hours of driving a day, also don’t forget that the Teamsters have been against the 11th hour of driving since the start.
The only people to benefit from suing the government would be the attorneys, same as any other class action suit. ELD’s aren’t going anywhere, so the focus should be on HOS reform. -
Yet another lawsuit. What could go wrong with that. Remember folks it was partially a OOIDA lawsuit that brought about ELDs.

Until those number are released, there is no way to tell of ELD's are causing more wrecks.
Of course if drivers would be legal, paper or ELD would not matter.... -
Those using the ELD before the mandate were ignored because the desire for control and decreasing efficiency was the real reason for the mandate.
The Bull-s advocacy groups, and the scum at the ATA were pimping reduced crash rates , SAFETY.
Fact is, the False guise of safety improvement is being discredited by the real world.
Since ELDs have been forced on the industry, crash rates have went up a good bit.... Not to mention the other real world problems it has created.
One example, rear collisions and risk thereof from an increase in the idiots that take 30 minute ELD breaks on highway shoulders now...or other totally unsafe areas.
You can't fix stupid and the world has an abundant supply.
ELDs need to go ...unless they come up with a better system that's not increasing the unsafe driving and accidents in the real world.
As usual though, the lobbyists are going to continue to destroy the country with Idiocracy like the ELD mandate. -
Crash numbers are up, but without knowing vehicle miles traveled it’s impossible to say if crash rates are up. Those are two totally different things.
