    A truck driver that complains? Run for the hills, Ma Barker!! I have become kind of the TTR pessimist here, only because, they don't tell you squat at the schools, and this is the reality of trucking. I don't really mean to crush your spirit, but not going to sugar coat it either. Trucking, for the driver, has never been better. Better equipment, better roads, this site, but it will, at some point, make you wonder if you made the right decision.Weather, brainless dispatchers, crabby shippers, that would rather not be there, all takes it's toll. There's no love on the road, especially today, but in all my years, I couldn't find anything I liked better, so go for it. Just don't burn any bridges at the flooring place.

    One of my high school classmates did flooring and started right at graduation from school.
    I think he was the second classmate to die out of our class. He was young, maybe not quite 30.
    The general feeling from those that knew him best felt it was doing flooring in unheated and new construction with no air conditioning during hot sweltering summers, sent him to an early demise from a heart attack.
    You'll love trucking and will wish you had started doing it years earlier. Find your niche and you'll have a great career and job satisfaction.
    Two of them, that happened to be brothers, died way before their time, after doing sheetrock for years.

    @DualsThatTouch

    If you want a day-cab job, no need to go OTR first.

    I got my job by walking in the terminal, and asking if they’d hire me.

    Home daily, work five days a week. Granted, I put in long hours, and the first few months were pretty rigorous, as I proved myself to my boss, but...it was worth it.

    No way would I go OTR, or suggest it, just to ‘get experience’. Those days have passed. Trucking companies are hard up for qualified applicants, and someone with a work ethic that walks through the door is a leap ahead of the game.

    You type well, and seem capable of coherent thought. Sell yourself with that attitude, and you can start out with a pretty awesome job from the get-go.

    If you have any specific questions, I’ll be glad to chat via PM or telephone.

    I have a short list of companies that i am going to apply at. Going to be putting in applications next week. Top 3, Holland, Trimac and Fedex. Also considering Mansur, pti paper, xpo logistics, cpc logistics, ups. And there are a handful of other companies if I dont get a job at any of the above. Cdl training is going great, shifting has smoothed out, I only initially missed one shift last week friday but got it right back in and been getting in 75-140 miles a day during class. I have gotten to drive thru rush hour traffic a couple times now too, with hill starts and people cutting in front of you and all that fun stuff. Feeling pretty good about being able to handle a local job right from the get go, if i get one. Merry Christmas, and Happy New Years, stay safe out there!

    I passed the test the 1st time and got my cdl license on Thursday, i also obtained my tanker hazmat and doubles/triples endorsements after i passed the license tests. I applied to usf holland and fedex freights driver apprentice positions. I am holding off applying to trimac, been watching too many youtube videos. I did see a trimac liquid oxygen tanker leaving the hospital my wife works at, i was keeping my distance, haha.

    Good show, ol' chap. There's other tanker jobs that don't go Kablooey, and that's rare in itself. Tanker still the best trucking job out there.

    I hauled acid and lots of other stuff in tankers, 48 states & Canada.
    No big deal for new cdl graduates to do all that, otherwise, tanker companies wouldn't hire them.
    The company I worked for hired two new cdl grads when I worked there and they were just as good at the job as the rest of us.

    I finally got to my interview friday morning, it was delayed a couple days to due the cold weather. After i get thru the prehire stuff next week, should be no problem, i will be starting the drivers apprentice program at holland. I am pretty excited and very relieved that I can stop looking for a job. It will be 30 days working on the dock, 2-4 months of the actual driver apprentice program, then a 3 day orientation in Indianapolis and then I can call myself a truck driver. I am still in disbelieve that this is happening, it has just been so long that I have been thinking/worrying about finding a career change, and I know there is a lot of hard work ahead to still become a successful driver, but what a relief to finally be here where I am right now.
