Okay so far I'm about 3 months away from finishing up my first year driving semi-truck OTR. I'm locked into a year with PAM in return for a break on tuition.
I've been thinking about what I might do next and was curious if one can transition from long haul OTR to other heavy machinery transport jobs like different kinds of dump trucks. Either the ones you see on the street hauling stuff or the big CAT dump trucks at construction sites. I also wondered how much work like that pays.
One reason I wondered about this type of work is if it might be good for more hometime.
Another reason is if Obama really pushes Infrastructure rebuilding work maybe this type of trucking might be more in demand.

Video,
I can't really help you out with any info. about your area. What I can tell you, however, is that here in the coalfields of Virginia, coal haulers are making $50-$70K a year. I know, because my wife's brother has hauled coal for the past 30 years and grossed $75K last year as a company driver. My wife's uncle owns about 10 trucks and hires drivers for all of them... they're making $60-$70k each a year. After getting some OTR experience, I plan on getting my own truck and 30'-35' dump trailer and finding myself a haul as well.
Good luck! -
I've been eyeballing his plan.
Looks like OTR pay scales will recover, if he follows through.
The rats will abandon ship. And the blood suckers will be forced to donate -

Hmm there is a waste management company that handles trash and recycling in my county. Maybe I'll check in with them. -
I have been driving 10 years here in WA. state and also some limited OTR in my career and this last August I registered with the Teamsters union doing road construction and we are getting paid $27-$32 hr. with overtime after 8 hours and the employer also put into your pension and paid your benefits weekly (this didn't come out of our paychecks) but in order to get your pension when you retire you have to have a total of 500 hours in a year otherwise you lose it I think. Overall it was a good job, you just had to be very careful and look at where you were at on the job site and listen carefully to the radio because the operators are communicating with all the other trucks on the job site as well as you. I was driving a bellydump and had never done anything like it before but it was fun and a new experience and like it alot better than OTR and dealing with different (and sometimes grouchy customers) and it paid a lot better than any OTR driving job ever will and I slept in my own bed every night!!

that's a really a sought after job around here.. either with waste management, or local transfer stations..
decent trucks, good power, and you pull a 5 axle gondola. -
If the country ever gets turned around & starts building things again & starts working on road repairs the off highway haul truck jobs will be booming again. Its a great job & fun to do, if you can get in with a place that has teamsters running the trucks you will make big money as well. I was making 26.75 an hour driving a CAT 773E before everything went to hell.
#### I MISS THAT JOB! -
I think the main waste hauler in my county is Republic Waste. They merged a while ago and I see some jobs listed on their website for drivers paying $12 to $15 for residential pick up. Didn't see much info on bigger trucks hauling to the landfills or recycle plants though.

I drive a belly dump doing road construction as well, it's a good living, much better than anything I was ever offered OTR. 25% of the load, truck generally makes 1000-1200 a day so I make out pretty well.
They are usually very small companies as well with one on one communication with your boss and no dispatcher to deal with.
