Good thread to read, thanks. I'm a bit of a gypsy soul and am itching for a move. I have considered living out of a truck (or my bus) and stockpiling money. I am not much of a people person and prefer solitude. My husband says he could do this, but I have my doubts. He's too much of a social butterfly. He says he would be fine as long as we are together, but I worry how this might impact his psyche over time. He thrives on the interaction of others and loves to talk. Me...not so much. I find the open road very relaxing and energizing all at the same time. I do wonder if you could retrofit a small black and fresh water tank on a rig, like an RV so we could at least have a sink. There's no way he would ever use the truck as a restroom though. He's far too neat for that and I'd be far too close....besides it would give us a reason to get out of the truck and stretch. I wish like hell he would get his darned CDL while I am still stuck here in my current career. i have a few months left then I am free to roam. Would be too easy if he already had his and his training completed so he could then be my trainer and we could team, until it drove him nuts, then who knows? It may just be me out there....wandering.

Hey gator girl. I am a bit like you. I have had two campers over the years and I would often go camp by myself. Montana, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, California. Usually just for a few days. Sometimes for two weeks. OTR life is not exactly like camping. But if you like camping, it helps. Out here you have a job and responsibilities. OTR can absolutely satisfy that need to camp and be alone in many ways . I think of it like being a tug boat operator. The tugboat captain has a lot of work he does every day. But his job is great because he gets to be out in the open ocean and see things that no one else sees. That’s what OTR can be sometimes.

Exactly. I think I would be happy with something that was not as time sensitive as say a refer...more chill like a flatbed or a dry box.

So here I am at 60 and tired of corporate retail management. Wife, two small dogs and I are wanting to do OTR trucking. Its not about the money. We are debt free. Looking for a company that allows rider/pet policy, CDL training, Newer trucks, APU and Inverters!! Is this realistic?? Read numerous threads and this looks totally doable to us. Please advise

Definitely doable. If finances are not an issue, I suggest Steven's Transport. They are a training company that also delivers freight. Most companies that will do turnkey training are freight companies that also train. Their support system for new drivers is excellent, if you are the sort that is willing to ask for help.

Steven's has nice trucks, but do not pay terribly well. This is clearly intentional. They need to push grads out the door after a year or so, so they have trucks for newer grads.

IMHO, go to Steven's. Put in a year without screwing up, and most decent dry van or reefer companies will be happy to hire you.

I did 1.25 years at Steven's, then moved over to Crete/Shaffer.

Call them and ask about their pet and rider programs. I know that three years ago, they allowed both riders and pets, but do not know the specifics.

If you want company sponsored cdl school, look at www.cfidrive.com as they allow wife & pet to ride along.
Freymiller will reimburse cdl school tuition if you pay for private school. This is one of the best refrigerated outfits and allows wife & pet. www.drive4freymiller.com and click on "Recent Graduates."
