The penalties for texting and driving are about to get more real.
The Ontario government is introducing a new mandatory three-day driver’s licence suspension on a first conviction for distracted driving as of Jan. 1.
And the new minimum fine for a first offence of distracted driving is rising to $615 if settled out of court, up from the current minimum of $490, with a maximum fine of up to $1,000.
That first offence will also come with three demerit points.
A second offence within five years carries a fine of up to $2,000, six demerit points and an automatic seven-day driver’s licence suspension.

2 distracted convictions and your license is up for review in Ontario.

Following Manitoba. Still not as strict as we are, but going in the right direction.

Still won't make much of a difference. People have had 5 or 6 years here in Manitoba to put the phones down while driving, I haven't noticed a difference.
Aamcotrans, upnorthwpg and Canadianhauler21 Thank this. -

3 days is not a deterrent. Make it a year then lifetime

Which place was it that even included CB radios with cell phones?

You can make the penalty as high as you want. Doesn't make a bit of difference if the majority of the enforcement comes after a accident has already occurred.
magoo68 Thanks this.
