While you all make good points about smokers, one simple point is missing. One of the reason that they ask this question is if they put you in a truck with another driver or trainer, they don't want to match up a smoker and a non smoker as it usually doesn't end well. Also, they try to keep the smokers in trucks that have been smoked in and non smokers in trucks that have never been smoked in.
Another point about smokers: Smokers tend to be the least productive employees because they take more breaks during the workday than other employees. They usually take several "smoke breaks" during the workday.
They are also the most expensive ones to insure because of all the smoking related illnesses that occur.scottied67 Thanks this. -
I'm a smoker and I get assigned a new truck when the time is due. I do not stop for smoke breaks, and I couldn't care less about the insurance.

That said, for a driver, I don't see how this counts. I've never seen a driver smoke and take a break to do it. it's always either while walking back to the truck or driving. Mostly while driving.snowman_w900 Thanks this. -
