    Belials--
Wow!! sure glad i found this thread.....I have a new Peterbilt 389 on order with the Cummins X-15 565hp and 2050 torque package, should be taking possession of it late Jan 2019. There are so many warranty options available I'm getting an ulcer trying to decide what I should or shouldn't purchase. Peterbilt Base Warranty is 1YR/100K, not sure what all that covers. Cummins Base has 2YR/250K. My plans are to keep the truck four years. If I bought all the warranties I will be dropping some serious cabbage.....like $16K.....what are thoughts on these warranty options?
    Peterbilt Base Options:
    2/YR/200K $1265
    2YR/300K $1815
    3/300K $2915
    3/400K $3474
    4/400K $4370
    4/500K $5445
    Cummins Extended Options:
    Engine 5YR/500K $6485
    Engine w/travel & towing $7735
    Aftertreatment DPF 5YR/500K $3050

Absolutely get Cummins extended warranty - these are called Protection Plan 1 and Aftertreatment (HD1 and ATX). There are others (Protection Plan 2 for instance) but these are the two that are most common.

I always tell people get Protection Plan 1 and Aftertreatment. It will cover the majority of the engine and one decent failure is going to pay for itself.

In regards to the mileage / duration that's 100% up to you and in many cases you can customize it a decent amount. For instance if you're a low mileage driver but want a long duration - do 5 years / 300k for Cummins.

That will alter the price, and you won't have to buy a plan that's going to cover extra mileage you won't hit. Granted if you think mileage will be an issue then get as much as you want.

One thing to consider when it comes to Cummins is that they will only cover a tow bill / road call during the base warranty (24 month / 250,000 miles) in the event of an engine failure. This is where the "travel and towing" option comes in. If you'd like to have your tows paid for by Cummins - that's a good plan to choose. One decent tow bill will pay for itself.

On the Peterbilt side - again you can customize it quite a bit. Mileage, duration, etc. You can also select specific thing. If you only wanted to cover the HVAC system you can pick that (that's fairly rare though).

Peterbilt doesn't cover towing at all, which is something to keep in mind. No matter what you buy on their end they won't cover a tow. But the extended warranty from Peterbilt is going to cover virtually 100% of the truck. It's basically just an extension of the basic vehicle warranty and actually helps out quite a bit.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Belials,
Thank you so much for that info!!! Your advice and insight is priceless!!, I know exactly what I'm going to do now. One other quick question.....like I said, my plans are to keep the truck for 4 years. If I bought the 5YR/500K Cummins warranty, is that warranty transferable to the buyer?

The Cummins warranty follows the engine - they don't care who owns it.

Peterbilt warranty is transferable as well, but there is paperwork that needs to be done. It's super easy and any dealer can do it.

    Belialas,
My base PB warranty will be 1YR/100K, Cummins warranty 2YR/250K.....they are telling me I can wait on purchasing extended warranties until the provided ones run out. Is that true and if so do you know how long I actually have to purchase them? for example if the Cummins warranty expires in 2 years can i purchase the extended in 1 year 11 months or does that need to be done in the first year or anything like that?

Once your warranty expires - you're unable to add extended warranty.

For PB - you can purchase extended warranty up until the base warranty has expired.

For Cummins, I'm nearly 100% certain you can add it up until it has expired but here's the catch....
Months 0 - 12 you can order Cummins extended warranty thru Peterbilt

Months 13 - 24 the Cummins extended warranty MUST be ordered thru Cummins

And if you order warranty after 18 months, your price will increase $400 per certificate as a late fee. Because you will likely purchase two certificates (Protection Plan + Aftertreatment) that will be an additional $800 you will have to pay.

So buy them as soon as you can.

Belials, Do you deal with Mack trucks at all? If I provided you with a VIN would you be able to provide any history on the truck or info on remaining warranty? Thanks!!
