I just saw a post on fb of an O/O that hit a big cow head on. He asked what he should do next. Well, besides all the obvious stuff, I have a little advice I posted.
Make sure you DEMAND BOTH front springs, hangers and anything else that took the impact get replaced. I had a lady come across the highway and cause an accident in front of me and I hit both of them (by that time maybe only at 25 mph in the rain). 100% not at fault and my insurance co. would only cover a USED front fender, bumper and some other parts. After I settled with my insurance co. several months later I noticed a crack in my left steer spring. These were the composite one piece springs (about $1400 apiece just for the part). I should have fought harder when they told me they had already settled and they wouldn't cover replacement. I would never let that happen again. Check with a reliable front end shop, too. Don't let your insurance company short change you. That insurance adjuster is going to come on to you like he's your best friend, but he's there to give you as little as possible to save the ins. co. lots of money - AT YOUR EXPENSE! He's NOT your friend. Be wise as a serpent in this and don't let on that you know he's not out for your best interest. He's a SHARK!!
O/O's - IF you get into an accident!

You didn't notice a crack till several months later?
No insurance company in the world would help you out.
If it was there from the accident, you should have noticed it from the accident. -

That wasn't snooty and mechanics could just be guessing. They probably didn't even know till you told them.
Cracks happen. Not just because of accidents. I've had it happen once. -
Yeah I agree with snowwy. 25mph and that cracked the springs. Unlikely but anything is possible.
snowwy Thanks this. -
Lets go back to the guy that hit a cow.
I hope he was pulling a reefer. That steak should not go to waist.
If there was no crack in your spring after the accident and appeared later on after you settled, I don't think that there is insurance that will cover it.
However you are right about taking it to a shop and have a professional inspect it an give you an estimate for the repairs.
That's what I did when someone baked into me. Got my estimate from Peterbilt and sent it to the insurance. They send me a check less my deductible which I later got from the other guys insurance. I put a used bumper on, replaced the headlight myself and kept the rest for my troubles.Last edited: Jan 27, 2019

For the same reason if you crash on a bike and the helmet takes any impact at all, you're supposed to replace the helmet. It's not designed for multiple impacts, and the material is weakened by the first. Might not even be able to see cracks yet.
