I am registered under 26,000 lbs. thus my screen name lite bug. In your case as long as you are registered right with the truck and trailer. Normally you guys register way more than you carry. Just be sure to cut the weight off, so not to be running as much as you can legally carry. The less strain on your equipment the better in the long run.

IF you have a cab-chassis AND the decal on your door jam says INCOMPLETE VEHICLE AND you have a fifth wheel then DOT will treat you as TRACTOR then your trailer can be up to 53 feet or whatever length falls under TRACTOR-TRAILER category.

The reason for 65' length is because pickup trucks with beds on them are treated as STRAIGHT TRUCK, and straight trucks are limited to 65'.

Hey guys, quick question because I feel like different reps at DMV have told me different things. Do I need to have an air brake endorsement for my Class A CDL? I just want to be able to haul over 26K and I won't be using an air brake trailer so I'm kind of confused as to why they are forcing me to take it.

Second questions; How will I take my drive test? In my pickup? With the trailer?

Having a new rig helps, but if the DOT Officer wants to be a dick, they can find something wrong with a brand new truck. Just don't give them an excuse to look you over ( like un-kept rig, dangling straps, light out) & before you know it, you will be off their radar.

Got my answer today, completed my combination test and was allowed to attain my CDL class A learners permit with an air brake restriction. Feels good.

    Tests taken:
    Hazmat - 20 questions
    Gen. Knowledge - 50 questions
    Combination - 20 questions

You might want to think about the Hazmat part again. Insurance is going to be unreal. And being your new also. It will cost you way more. If It were me. And was not going to haul Hazmat 40% of the time. I don't think it would be touched . Wait until after that first year for sure on that.

I would get the hazmat. When you do your DOT numbers don’t register as a hazmat company. Guy above is right about cost. Could be 20k a year for that in extra insurance. May not get a insurance policy as a new entrant with hazmat.

If you already paid to get the endorsement then keep going on getting the endorsement. Unless you have a client that has hazmat loads that pays for your hassle and time. But good luck getting a policy with hazmat on your new entrant company.
