The way Swift (and soon Schneider) has it set, those yard moves will be logged on line 3.

I think regulatory/ops is going to shocked by the drop in utilization and the increase in "I ran out of hours" calls.

I don't understand why they do it. There is simply no way to avoid a yard move at some grocery warehouses when it is nothing else but a yard move. A yard move concept is just necessary in ELD rigidness. Do they think that yard jockeys will do the job for them or God forbid they will have them crawl undetected under 5mph which is pretty hard to do, not to mention it qualifies as falsifying, if they use it for trailer docking.

And yet FMCSA states otherwise. Well, in their definition anyway. That's why I said bi-polar.
While yes you are on private property on a yard, if you ever go on a road you need to log yard work "correctly" if you ever go on a public road. Heck, if you never go off property, you don't even need a CDL to yard jockey as FMCSA doesn't regulate private property.

And I'm not saying you are wrong, just wish FMCSA would either have not made a yard move category, or would have changed the definition.

Here is the guidance for not even needing a CDL.

    Question 16:
    a. Are vehicles which, in the course of interstate transportation over the highway, are off the highway, loading, unloading or waiting, subject to the FMCSRs during these times?

    b. Are vehicles and drivers used wholly within terminals and on premises or plant sites subject to the FMCSRs?

    Guidance:

    a. Yes.
    b. No.

Sorry but I don't understand why there needs to be a specific yard move definition. I mean, I don't understand where you see the problem of it not being defined by FMCSA - if you could give me an example of how it could be a problem during a DOT inspection or audit. Unless you're referring to an absurdal situation ( I am sure such abuses happen) when someone unloads 5 pallets in one part of town then moves 15 miles to another part to unload the rest and logs it all as a yard move.

The regs currently state that all time at the controls shall be logged on line 3.

Yet there is a mention of yard move in the fmcsa eld specs. It is not part of the HOS, but it's an "option", and the large carriers are electing not to use that option as it is not clearly defined in the HOS.

It's the same with PC - they updated "guidence " but haven't changed the actual regs, so if there is an incident there is no clear understanding of if the driver was compliant or not.

While you already stated you don't mind falsifying your logs, not all of us want to.
    Currently you have two options.
    1. Is to log yard moves as Driving. This complies with the current wording of the definition of Driving.
    2. Falsifying your log by using the Yard Move status in the ELD. Remember there is no definition that actually allows this in the regs.

I really don't care how you log, but to say it's fine to use yard move isn't 100% accurate.

OK. I know what the problem is now; there is basically no yard move sanctioned at all in the FMCSA book. So in theory they don't even have to acknowledge that such a thing exists and make you a log book "falsifier", if you use one.
The funny thing is that when I was on paper, I had no knowledge of a "yard move" at all and was always curious how the megas handle Elogs while staying for so long at Walmarts, Krogers, Safeways etc. I thought that as soon as they put the first gear on they're automatically on duty....but look at them - wicked hypocrites - they had all kinds of tools available -- 20mph - LOL - and with that they proceeded to level an equal playing ground for all.

Anyone that had electronic logging prior to the mandate has been allowed to continue use of their AOBRD until December of this year. The guy I drove flatbed for installed Omnitracs but we didn’t have the log function turned on until the day of the mandate. We were allowed to maintain the AOBRD mode. We could go up to 2 miles and up to 25mph before it kicked us to drive.

Everyone who held out until the last second thinking that Trump or OOIDA was going to save them pretty much shot themselves in the foot as it guaranteed them to have a true ELD when they decided to install one.

I have never heard of a “yard move”. So basically you could put yard move on your log and not interrupt a 10 hour break?

if you ask me, it's a waist of everyones time and money. why micromanage micromanagement? what happens when someone runs out of time? reschedule or send another truck with someone to pick the slack? I wonder how much I'll make this year. I imagine less. a cut in pay is added to the agenda

From what I understand yard move is on duty, so it counts against your 14 hr and 70 hr clock. So no you could not yard move without interrupting your 10 hour break.
