I am looking into schools to get my CDL. I live in California and I found 3 different schools and I’m not sure which one would be the best to choose. I have the money to pay my own way.
If you guys by chance know anything about these schools or what I should be looking for, I would appreciate any information.
United Truck Driver School
They offer 160hours of training. Triples, doubles, hazmat, tankers, etc endorsements. Lifetime job placement. It’s $5450.
Advanced School of Driving
Also offer 160hours of training. Person on the phone was a little vague about their endorsement training, but sounded like they do offer some sort of training on them. It’s $5000.
Truck Driver Academy
160hours training. $3300 and she said they don’t necessarily train specifically on endorsements, but they give you questions about them.
I also like the fact that, from their websites, it looks like both ASD and United use the sleeper trucks with the longer trailers compared to other schools. I feel like it would be more realistic that way since I’m planning on going OTR.
Which school to choose

lifetime job placement,,,,,,,,pfftt.......you won't need that after you get at least 6 months of experience.
i'd go the cheaper school Alex for $3,300
most of that doubles training you get ON THE JOB, that's how i and many others here, got thiers.
good luck.cranow12 Thanks this. -
Actually, all 3 look good. You do have a point though on training with sleeper trucks, so since you plan to go OTR, I'd go with one of those.
What type trucking are you interested in; refrigerated, dry van, flatbed?
Freymiller - www.drive4freymiller.com - click on "Recent Graduates", will reimburse $4000.00 of the tuition back to you.cranow12 Thanks this. -
As for endorsements; scroll to top of this page and click on "CDL Practice Tests" and there are all the questions and answers to the endorsement tests. Memorize as much as you can, then take the tests and your local DMV.

Here's some more names of OTR companies that hire southern California new cdl grads:
Danny Herman Trucking - dry van
Melton Truck Lines - flatbed
DOT Transportation - refrigerated - www.drivefordot.com

I'm attending Roadmasters in Fontana, CA. It's a really good school, all trucking companies accept them. They will get you all of your endorsements. The reason I chose them is because they offer a hotel to stay at for four weeks & they pay for it upfront for you to help you out. The lady who did my registration was also really hot too.
But jokes aside, my biggest recommendation for you is to actually go by there and check them out in person and talk with them. See if they meet your expectations. Do they care more about your education rather than just getting your money? Will they teach you 1 on 1 and 1 rather than a whole group? Things like that. That's how I made my choice.
& Yes, the rumor is true about Roadmasters, they will try to push Werner on you. However if you just politely say no thanks I have other companies in mind.. they will leave it at that. They will also help you get hired on with those other companies too instead of just Werner.
Hope this helps, best of luck to you buddy!cranow12 Thanks this. -

First off, I promise I'm not trying to sell you the place. I just know how hard it is to find accurate information on it. I couldn't find squat online about it and had to go there myself to get all the information. Now:
@cranow12 You actually have the choice. If you tell them you want to train in a manual then you'll train in a manual. All the mega companies have switched to Automatic's, including Werner (hence the advertisement of automatics.) However they still have manual's there from what I was told by the admissions lady when I asked and they will train you in them if you request it. I did not, because I don't see the need.
Werner is phasing them all out in their fleet though if they haven't yet, and they will more than likely try to persuade you into training in an automatic because of how easier it is and more convenient for them it is. This is because almost every student is training in an automatic there. However I did see one or two names on the board that are training in a manual. Just be vocal and ask. The negative reviews you see, are the ones who more than likely did not ask, and just assumed they would get it. This is wrong. They will train you in an automatic unless you speak up.
This all may change, and they might stop offering it at any time though~~
If you do decide to go there, (this applies anywhere) you cannot be afraid to speak up. Always ask questions, and always make sure you get the training you need. It's a fairly big school, they usually have a group of about 10 students, so you have to be vocal. Do not, under any circumstances let them change your ways. Trucking recruiters are 100% like military recruiters. They will try and sell you on the cake that is a lie just to get your signature.
and most important of all, do not let me sell you into it. Make the choice you feel is best for you. Go with the school you feel you are most comfortable with.
Hope this helps.cranow12 Thanks this. -
I will have to definitely look into them some more and actually call and talk to someone before I make my decision because they do seem like a good school. -
I like that.
I don't feel the need to be trained in a manual.
Considering most local companies use manual.
