You're good on it all the way from verrazano to triboro, but truth be told you're better off just taking gwb in and out. Unless you're traveling 278 from 10pm-3am

OP asked for the cheapest route- just considering tolls here:
Njtp 287-gwb is ~$28 each way last I recall, +~$100 for the gwb northbound, +$40 each way for the Whitestone/throgs neck.
Vs ~$100 for the Goethals, +$40 outbound on the throgs neck then out 80 to 287.

$96 more in tolls for a savings of about 20-25 minutes worth of Brooklyn traffic and still getting stuck on GW traffic..

$96 worth of tolls pays for quite a bit of fuel and extra miles.

gwb off peak hours is $85, tnb is $28 each way with ezpass, you will be on 278 longer than cross bronx and it will be for more then 25m and you add the extra miles you drive to 80 and 287, not worth it.

That’s about $110 in tolls all in. Good point indeed.
