I was referring to the fact that those platforms, by raising the level of the fifth wheel, would allow connections without having to crank down.

Cranking down is normally not terribly difficult, but if you have to put a lot of pressure on the crank and you are standing on ice, you are an instant away from an accident involving you, gravity, ice, and that crank handle.

Dave, we were in the same neck of the woods possibly. I left Caldwell yesterday morning with a load for Medford. I usually go out 20, but Oregon Trip Check said 20 was closed in multiple locations, so I took the long way around, down 84. The roads were bad all the way from Ontario to Pendleton. I’m at Jubitz in Portland now, I’ll be heading out at 3:00 am for an 8:00 am Medford appt.

I finally invested in a Chain Dawg, best $45 I’ve spent in awhile. Makes it much easier to get my chains as tight as I like them.

No one is cranking down anything in those conditions lol.

Not to mention your landing gear and crank handle are encased in a 6 to 8 inch block of ice.

    Farmerbob1 Thanks this.

Then you may as well chain the conventional way. Would take a long time to wrap up each tire, one at a time. Plus, that method would not allow putting on 3-railers [which I really don’t care for running in the lower 48, anyway]

When I started out the other day, there was no good way in. It was restrictions on every road. 84 had multiple crashes to go with it through the Blue Wilderness.

I escaped down 5. Often the load I take up won't scale for the length restriction of the communist state.

It's great 8 months out of the year lol. After the last time over Snoqualmie, in a WTF storm, I said were done with you until spring.

I have to carry them, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna use em.

If the sign says chain up... I say PARK IT, thank you very much...

When you use this tool, make sure you dont do it super tight cause it can be a real beatch to get them off. Found out once whilst trying to unchain. Nearly resorted to the bolt cutters, but eventually got it off. Otherwise a great tool.

Last Sunday night chaining up to go over Cabbage in LaGrande, they shut the road in front of me and behind me. Anyway there was a bloke behind me saying that too, even though he was in the chain up area!! If your not gonna chain, don't hang out in the chain up areas.
