"Police say trailer involved in triple fatal accident was parked illegally... the trailer involved in this crash was in a legal parking space, except it should not have been facing in the opposite direction of traffic."

What does that trailer being backwards have to do with it being hit lol. Maybe that reflective tape?

Which is on the underride protection (more importantly).

Shifting the blame of the accident onto the trailer as a way to say the accident wouldn't have happened

This "news" story is just an anti-trucking hit piece. Had these teenagers struck a telephone pole, another car, SUV, or van parked alongside the road, facing either direction, Q13 snews would not be reporting this tragedy the same way.

Had this crash occurred with the trailer facing the "correct" direction have made any difference? Perhaps all four would have been decapitated making this crash even worse.

The description of the impact and immediate aftermath is a clear indication that high speed and careless driving caused this crash, and not some "illegally" parked trailer. The stupid news story makes it sound like the trailer moved on its own and that the trailer itself struck this small car.

This alleged news story is a fine example of what is wrong with our society in that we refuse to put blame where it actually belongs.

That would maybe prevent some damage done, but if it was parked legally like they claimed, the drivers ran into it not driving straight

The underride protection was mandated to prevent (or minimize) fatalities, as a result of bad driving (or otherwise), not to prevent bad driving.

If I’m given the option to drive 40 mph into an icc bumper or underneath the nose of a trailer [where the height comes up to my neck ... perfect decapitation height], I’ll take my chances with hitting the icc bumper and giving the airbags a chance to work

"Last year, federal lawmakers introduced legislation aimed at preventing deadly underride crashes — the Stop Underrides Act of 2017. The bipartisan legislation would require underride guards on the sides and front of a truck and update the standards for underride guards on the back of trucks" . . .

Although this probably wouldn't cover these other scenarios, like protecting the front of a trailer parked backwards, or driving onto a car carrier, etc. It would be more difficult, as it obviously complicates the operation of hooking vehicles up (to prevent vehicles from going there). Maybe if a gate cranked up and down like the landing gear... oh yeah, "we're building a wall", right. They need to put a snow/ice guardrail on top, and a wheel-off retainer on the sides too. Don't forget reflective tape on the top and bottom, in case of a rollover. Some things are practical, some aren't.

By the way, I don't know why they'd want to hook up to a trailer that's facing oncoming traffic, on a relatively narrow road (also a bad idea).
