Actually, those Hendrickson grease hub style setups are not technically considered maintenance free. Just because they dont have a "sight glass" on them doesn't mean you shouldn't pull the cap every year or so and do an inspection of the condition of the grease or wheel end adjustment.

Seems to be a huge misconception about oil hub setups being "better" than grease hub setups. You do realize that once the hubs in a grease setup gets to operating temperature, the grease solidifies and essentially lubricates in the same manner as actual oil style setups. You've gain absolutely nothing by switching over.

The bearings, races, the seal, the hub....all the same, just different oil and hub cap assembly. Lack of maintenance was your problem most likely, not the grease.

    Probably right.

Other than when one had an inner wheel seal leak,.. I have never done anything to them before the studs broke off on that axle.

I switched them over for my own peace of mind. No other reason.

Hurst, I’m looking into step decks. Is yours the low deck or regular? Do you know your bottom deck height? Just wondering if the extra money is worth it to get the low deck of 36”? Thanks

I sold that trailer in January. If I remember correctly the lower deck was originally 41 or 42 inches. Your not going to get it down to 36 inches with 22.5 wheels. You would need to go with a smaller wheel.

I modified the suspension levelers to drop the height 2 inches. Mine rode at 39 inches. That was as low as I could safely get it.

Your 5th wheel height on your tractor will effect the ride height as well. If you have a tall 5th wheel,.. you could end up taller than what Fontaine advertises. Over all it was a great trailer and served me well.

Regarding whether the low profile step is worth the money or not should be determined whether you need it or not. Same as the tractor,.. the trailer is but another tool used to make money. If you currently need a lower deck height for specific loads,.. then yes the lower deck height will be required. But over all,.. I did fine with mine at 39 inch deck height. I was never unable to find loads.
