Well in training I was always taught to get the tank sticked first thing. Well if you do that there's a possibility there's pressure in the tank. Sometimes there is sometimes not. I've taken a tank reading then went to the vent for that tank and just pressed it down with my stick to see if there's any pressure and there was some. I then sticked the tank again it was 10 inches higher than my first reading.

Not worried about AQMD while doing that?

SSShhhhhh! ;). When vapor recovery first became standard...that was about a million years ago when we were switching from top loading to bottom loading...we used to pop our domes after we unloaded to get rid of the vapors. A lot of the places we loaded didn't have a vapor recovery system anyway. They'd just vent the vapors out behind the tank farm somewhere where nobody could see.
If they caught you doing that now they'd probably have you shot.

Or you could just hook up your vent hose first then get reading. Same difference lol

Here's a tip. Make fuel hauling your stepping stone into hauling cryogenic liquids. Much easier on the body and better pay.

Stick a clothespin into the lip of each dome lid on your way to get a load of bulk oil from Chevron after hauling gas the day before. That should vent it out enough to get past the sniffer they use at the refinery. I saw guys do this. I always did what they wanted: at least TWO full loads of diesel beforehand, no gas vapors!

As far as sticking tanks... We were required to. Our load sheets had a before and after space for each product tank. If it wasn’t recorded, you’d get a phone call. We used tank charts and the veeder root reading was another reference.

So far so good with my new fuel hauling job. I've been learning allot and having a great time. Two surprises so far: 1. I didn't think I would enjoy driving their automatic trucks. I've only driven sticks. I actually love it! It simplifies the work day a little. 2. Every store/company has their own procedures they want followed for unloading and you have to learn them. Same with the Racks for loading. There are similarities but the steps and paperwork vary. I just assumed there would be a set standard across everyone.

Thanks to everyone for this great thread, learning a lot here just by listening to how everyone else does or did things.
