    So, i guess it's ok to talk about NEMF now...

    First, i want to say that i worked at NEMF before and it was one of the best (in the top 3) gigs that i ever had. The reason i left was due to family reasons. If i had not gotten on with UPSF, i would have re-applied at NEMF. In retrospect, perhaps it was better for me that it turned out this way. Then again, who could have ever known?

    The first thing i want to discuss is:

    Why did NEMF primary use 53' vans instead of twin 28' pups?

    i think it's more efficient to use vans for linehaul----especially with niteliner. Although, i do see situations where it's more efficient to use 2 pups.

    I disagree with you on the premise that a trailer will more often than not cube out vs. weigh out. 2 pups add another 232 ft/cu of freight capacity over a 53’ van. Not to mention the efficiency of freight in two doors being worked by double the people vs one 53’ van

    I’m probably wrong but those are my perceptions.

    That might be true about 4 people working on 2 trailers vs. 1 or 2 people working on 1 trailer, BUT, i don't see it on the dock---virtually NEVER----usually one forklift every few mins...? Plus, it takes the driver twice as long to hook and/or drop, not to mention we have to wait until the very end to see which one is heavier vs. if it was a van, the driver could be hooked up, pre-tripped, and ready to go at the very beginning of the night.

    As far as cubing out first, i totally agree with LTL.

    I would also venture to say given the newly learned fate of NEMF, that the capital expenditure for lots of pups and dollies may have been unfeasible for their books.

    Most regional LTLs pull long boxes, whereas big, national LTLs pull pups. I think it's about what makes most sense for the operation.

    I, for one, am not sad about only pulling long boxes.

    But why, specifically, though? Especially for home terminal-to-hub-to home terminal operations?

    I wonder if nationals do it because they can move different destination terminal freight farther down the line. Without having to strip it, if it were in a long box.

    Say in Columbus Ohio. You have 53’ of freight. Half going to Indianapolis. Half going to Houston Texas. If you had a long box. You would probably have to load it all going to Indy. Then Indy would unload the whole trl and reload the Houston on another trl.

    Where as if you have 2 pups. You can put Houston on one trl. Indy on another trl. Now a driver can pull both to Indy. And leave the Houston pup in the yard where it won’t be touched.
