What's good and what's not about getting a job with sign on bonus?

They don't pay out right away. They give you some until you been working for a year

Sign on bonuses are typically more like retention bonuses that are paid to the driver in installments rather than upfront.

It's a way of conning you into accepting a job that nobody else wants to work for unfavorable conditions. If it was a great job, they wouldn't need to offer sign-on bonuses and lots of us would be filling out applications, but since nobody wants the job they offer the sign on bonus as an incentive to suck you in.

Makes sense. Company is bad but you have to stick around to get money you deserve. Is the pay/mile worse too?

    sevenmph Thanks this.

The bonus is almost always paid out over 2-6 months, if not 1 year. Generally you get some portion of the bonus within 30 days and then some more every few months. I think US Xpress had a $10,000 bonus paid out over YEARS, if you stayed that long.

Focus on a company you want to work for and accept the pay/bonuses they provide. It's far more important to pick a company that has the work and conditions you like than work for the company with the biggest bonus. I accidentally discovered my company had a weekly guaranteed paycheck, which was like a 40-60% raise from my last company. I then noticed they paid about another $10k in bonuses over the first year.

I know a guy who operates several trucks in a niche market and is highly specialized. He pays a handsome bonus every Dec.

yup, they can promise you certain money but can't bother reading the small print you may have just shot yourself. In small print like work from certain day to another day and also ya they overlap and they don't care you have to do a 34 reset you failed your side so why should they guarantee you the pay.

They will con you if you are not careful claim it's on your end. the bottom line will be what are you willing to do and what aren't you willing to do. for example, I will not set foot back into NYC for any amount money as a trucker unless I have a weapon but there lies the issue so I stay away my next company maybe has its flaws but based on what I am told I can live with them, as for bonus I don't know any company gives you the money upfront some companies claim you get it over a period of time some run the numbers and found they actually lost money lack of a run during said bonus was gonna happen.
