I'd read that he survived (or at least in pictures). Anyway, there's no good reason to argue that leaving the doors open is perfectly safe. Often the conspicuity tape is there too.

Never leave your doors open. This is not a mistake you make. To leave them open meant that the driver pulled out of a dock and most likely just drove away. Removing chock and going back to truck is not enough to forget. If someone is that lost in thought to be able to forget to do something that big, then it’s time to move to a desk and save yourself and others from God knows what might happen if you stay behind the wheel. Now I’m no saint but I’ve never left them open more than just to get from the office to my door but never on a public road, that’s just asking for all kinds of trouble.
