That all depends on how much home time you want or need. You can live pretty much anywhere, but might not make as much as you want or have to stay out longer than youwant. I chose to live in New Mexico when I was running the lower 48, I hate humidity, but could have done a lot better if I had moved east, but money is not everything. Did I say I hate humidity. lol

In an area you have plenty of possible customers for the type of work you're going to go after, either direct or through brokers.

Learn where the freight moves by being a company driver for a few years doing what you think your master plan might be.

Everyone should stay out of the Midwest. Indiana in particular there is no money. Good luck finding drivers in this area too. There is a gazillion trucking companies.

Sadly that’s a true statement right now!

Live next-door to your shipper or down the street and you’d have it made

Midwest, but there are lots of tolls and sometimes traffic. The midwest usually has the highest load rates. In fact, I’ve never seen the midwest lower than any other region, but I’m sure there will be months out of the year when that’s not the case.

Some states and regions may be prone to higher rates on average, but it seems like a decline in rates every so often is inevitable. CA was doing pretty good before January 2019, but then the rates went south. There was lots of inbound loads, but little outbound, which drove rates to the floor. I think it has finally picked up, though.
