So I have a class A cdl with an automatic restriction. Could I take another test in say a straight truck (think box truck) with a manual to have that restriction removed?
Cdl A and CDL C, how to remove automatic restriction?

Take test in box truck with manual, you will get a class b.
You must take test in vehicle for what you want on license. Even if you have class a with automatic.
With that said, must be a 18 wheeler with a Eaton fuller and you best have your stuff together. The minute you start grinding and missing gears, is the minute the examiner has you pull the truck over and makes you ride back to the yard in the seat of shame.
Unfortunately, yeah you must retake the whole exam to get the restriction removed. That’s why it is stressed on this site to never get a cdl in a automatic unless you plan on driving for a mega for the rest of your life. However, a lot of locals are adding autos to their fleets these days becuase they can’t find drivers. -

I tell people thinking about trucking that has to be in a manual 18 wheeler to test for CDLA until Blue in my face.
