They look like caps to me. I'd say the recap is failing. I wouldnt necessarily blame anything on the trailer at this point.
Looks like you may be doing alot of sharp turns too, the sides and corners look scrubbed pretty hard. Side load and twisting adds alot of stress to the tire.x1Heavy, Working2party and Scottyotty1 Thank this. -
When you have chunks of tire pulled off, or complete ribs separated, the tires got hot, dry rotted or quality issue. You do have some cupping, but that could be cause by several different things. But to answer your primary question, I say tire quality problem.

What brand? Recaps?

My old man used to run caps on drives and trailer. Remember one summer we had a few tires throw chunks like that. Just ####ty recaps.

Caps? You can see that? Others have a lot of good points. What came to mind for me damage from hazards. Have you been in a plant with R R tracks or uneven concrete you had to drive across at a close angle. It could even happen on a curb.
x1Heavy and Scottyotty1 Thank this. -
That does look like a common recap failure. But if they are caps then they look better lined up than what I’m use to. Those failures have been explained as a cut, at some point the rib was cut all the way across. Then after hitting the ground a couple thousand times it develops a flap that eventually tears the rib off.
x1Heavy Thanks this. -
What throws me off about tire quality is that it’s both tires on same axle, I’ll take a closer I guess they didn’t seem like recaps to me.
Haven’t been on any particular rough roads -

I have not run recaps in years, but in those days we have had tires do that. Scrapped. Or recapped and back on the trailer they go.
Since that particular company I made sure that I would never be in a truck with recaps, followed by a personal policy to have the shop place 10 virgin tires on the tractor every october and put the best of the old onto the trailer and rest into the trailer tire pile for future use. FFE has always been more than happy to give me 10 virgins every year. As did three other companies.
It would be nice to run your trailer to a shop and fix all of the little nicky picky suspension and so on issues. When you know that your trailer is healthy back there in it's bones, then invest in some good tires for once. And stop enduring failing recaps.
