This past two weeks we have been sitting much longer than we'd like (Transport America). We are thinking it's better to sit tight than try to switch companies if there is a general frieght shortage. But- we are definitely spending this downtime running other options. The company just hired another batch of drivers I saw them at the terminal the other day, talking about the nice miles they've been getting.
I know it's cheaper to pay newer drivers, but the turnover is a cost unto itself. I wish these companies would work a little harder to keep their current drivers instead of pandering to the revolving door market (CRST, I'm talking to you).
Like the original poster- I am concerned that my company hired a bunch of new drivers- anticipating this slowdown(or not reacting fast enough to it) - and now we are all going to be stuck sitting until attrition does its thing and freight picks up
