Blanket advice is giving a one size fits all model/situation. You will run a 365 3406E differently that a 550 3406E. Or C 15 B model what have you. C13 and C12 do not have the same power range as 14L or 15L engine.
A Cmodel and B model both use a full range governor. Do you know what that is? It means when the motor trys to pull down the governor will shift the full to maintain the RPM that your foot is at.
I got some pictures in a CAT failure analysis book at the house. I can show you what lugging one does to it.
You obviously like to argue, and your not my 13 year old boy to argue with. It's not in me to shame a child like I would a man so I'm done with the whole dealLast edited: Apr 30, 2019
kwswan, jamespmack, Unidewking and 1 other person Thank this. -
I read and amazing article posted by a meber of this forum one time discussing the power range. The space in the rpms between max torque and max horse power where the engine is working good. Now i may be wrong cause its been a few months since i read it, but the torque number stays near the max till out of the power range when spinning the higher rpms does hurt the motor.
Im am glad yur father has had a fruitful career trucking, but what works for him may not work for me. Or any other trucker for that matter.
You ever heard of a big cam cummins? Ive seen many a post on this forum froms guys that have put hundreds of miles on them and they say that those engines like takin hill above 1500 because if you drop below 1500 they just poop on themselves. What you gonna say to that? BuT tHe PeAk ToRqUe Is At 1300 -
Detroit only because they last forever they dont work hard obviously because they're last up the hill. Imo this extends engine life which saves out of pocket cost

To the c13 guy i wasnt meaning to insult you but making the point that there is a right and wrong way 1650 is only a little high in my book on a long grade its better to find a gear that you can hold a reasonable rpm and reasonable speed in. To the wore out trucker
I agree lugging will detroy a engine faster than the epa but about 1300 isnt lugging is it ? Ill admit the 3406b and such that are mehanical run a little higher rpm but 1500 would still work on flat ground now on a hill yeah she may need 1600 1700 to get up it but on flat ground with a normal load it doesnt need that much do you agree please explain how you believe it should be run ? I am intrested to see what works for you.
ndpenguin Thanks this. -
ALSO TO EVERYBODY:i dont like to argue but a guy had said "Cat because of mpg lol" i responded that Cats get good mpg if driven right and i explained our way of driving and that we got 7mpg for over 5 years. Then the other guys said "thats not how i drive my truck thats wrong blanket advice is bad" and so on. all i am doing is explaining my thinking. Thats all,no more no less. i wana do it with out arguing but anything i say it seems king doesnt like. I havnt been trying to argue this whole time. -
Ok thats it no matter what i do unless i crumble and say im so sorry im wrong will this crap stop so im tired of this crap im done bye.
-
To the big cam point. I simply wanted to help you understand that just because a statistic says 1850lbft of torque at 1250 doesnt mean that as long as im above 1250 the truck will pull thru no matter what gear im in. I heard put this way once. Torque is the ability to get the load moving, horsepower is how it keeps the load moving. Something to that effect -
And, for whatever it's worth, if you start another thread or another poll don't get angry when people disagree with you.
There's no shame in being wrong.Crude Truckin', 25(2)+2, wore out and 3 others Thank this.
