Am I insane? Thinking about going back to OTR.

    For some reason I've come down with an interest to go back to OTR from LTL. I've got it pretty good with FXF having a 500 mile hub turn and back to my domicile.

    But a couple of things are chiseling me right now.

    • I'm growing tired of city drivers trashing my tractor during the day time after I spend my delay time each night keeping it clean and immaculate and taking care of maintenance things at the shop. Its infuriating because the city driver always gets a truck that is clean, topped off with fuel and 100% road worthy. I don't leave nasty notes like some have been known to do.
    • My run is being regularly cut once or twice a week. The problem is seniority wise I fall under the top extra board, so I have to rely on 2 runs to be available for something to get down to me, and thats if another lane's last driver isn't cut as well, who ALSO has seniority on me.
    Maybe it's just the stress of the uncertainty talking...

    Those are probably the 2 biggest gripes of a local driver. I'm not sure what to tell you, I NEVER liked sharing a truck, for the same reason. Loads being cut? It's no different anywhere else. Do OTR, deadhead 300 miles, only to find the load was covered or canceled. The other alternative, is find a local job that you have your own truck. That's what I did, matter of fact, it became part of the interview, "will I have my own truck?" No? Adios,,,

    The only reason OTR would even seem viable is with companies beginning to offer guarantees and/or salary. Nussbaum for example would be were I start investigating if I ever had the chutzpa to leave the company.

    Well, that's the attraction of OTR, that truck is your home, kind of a 180 from what you're doing now. Nobody going to touch it, and for some, that's worth sitting 4 days over Christmas in some God forsaken truck stop in Nebraska waiting on a load. If you can handle that, by all means, do OTR. If you want a life, seeing the kids soccer games, enjoying a hobby and such, you'll just have to put up with the schmoes. It's part of trucking.

    Take the plunge; you won't regret it.
    I tried the local garbage and felt myself slowly slipping into insanity.
    Many OTR companies have guaranteed minimum weekly pay and many drivers on this forum are doing it with success.

    That’s what makes me grateful for what I have. It doesn’t exist anywhere else, since the majority of the city guys here run single screws and don’t share.

    I was talking with a P&D hand who said that he worked at a terminal where if a truck was trashed the TM would take all the garbage and put it on the offender's car.

    I've been hunting for that sort of run myself. Almost had one at a certain carrier, but wasn't as young as the other guy. The combo of windshield time, mostly own truck, and physical activity is the grail.

    I think I read Millis Transfer has a guaranteed minimum pay. Call and ask. I think I read somewhere it's minimum guarantee of $50K and can make much more, but hat's the minimum. It's worth a a phone call to be sure.

    My concern is being home. 3 young kids with a stay at home wife since putting them all in someone else's hands outside of school would cost a fortune and the juice wouldn't be worth the squeeze.

    Granted I'm home every day of the week and sleeping during the day M-F, I feel like I'd struggle to find a carrier to have me running M-F, home for Sat/Sun 90% of the year, earn $75k+, not have junk or worn out equipment (I wouldn't want anything older than 2 years and would want to have the prospect of getting a new truck within 6 months or so), no forced NYC dispatch and health insurance that doesn't cost a fortune for a family.

    Pipe dreams I know...
