Isn't jail time or the death penalty a detterent to commit a crime?

By locking this young inexperienced driver up for 100 years what message will we be sending?

The only message I see is "That'll teach them to come to my country" .
    Are we really this stupid?
    Are we living the rapture?

How about since it is a stoner state and pot and mushrooms are legal on a state level and there is a huge homeless population use that stuff as a carrot on a stick, supply some of them things along with a pick, wheel barrow and gloves and every time they get close just pull the supply a bit farther, then when they get to the other side let em have it.

Nation of immigrants.. that old song n dance.. no it isn't. It's a nation of citizens. The United States was founded in the beginning as a European colony. Hired hands from outside the country has been done by every nation on Earth.. I don't see Filipinos working in Saudi Arabia claiming it to be a nation of immigrants.. Wonder what the Saudi's would think of that? The ignorance on history is just astounding these days.

Apparently, not. Why do people commit crimes in the 1st place? They can't fit in to society, and modern jails aren't that bad. Health care, dental, internet, I heard Florence Super Max has like a 2 hour waiting time for the tennis courts. Put them in those urine soaked heck holes in Peru, THERE'S your deterrent. Of course locking this kid away forever doesn't stop what's the real problem. You put sub par drivers in a field that demands expertise, this is what happens. They can regulate the heck out of it, I mean, all these silly HOS regs and drug testing didn't help these poor people one bit. I don't have an answer, and not many people here do, it's a tough call. One thing for sure, I bet 10 foreigners become truck drivers to one American. It's something we will have to get used to. Even at minimum wage, we have to remember, this is Shagri-La to these people.

The driver WAS the problem, and pointing fingers at him is entirely appropriate.
    Punish the guilty.
The driver, the company that hired him, whoever enabled him to get a CDL without competency in English.
And then an immigration policy that serves the interests of Americans rather than foreigners would be great too, if we want to look farther afield. Was this unskilled, non english speaking Cuban imported for OUR benefit ? Nope. That wasn't the intention and it certainly wasn't the result.
This wasn't a failure of infrastructure.
This driver wasn't a victim of circumstance or impossible conditions or anything else. The dead are victims of someone who never should have been on our highways.

He killed 4 people, he may not have woke up in the morning and decided to kill somebody but neither does your average idiot who drives drunk and kills somebody, should we just write those off as just an accident and leave it at that? He made a choice not to take the runaway ramp, he chose not to rear end the truck, he chose to run people over, if all he gets is 30 years in jail he'll be lucky.

Why do you think he could not speak English? The police said he was able to communicate with them with no issues.
