Long story short, I lost everything in the crash of 2009 (house, wife, job). Currently 34 years young with no kids and moved back in with my folks helping take care of them while working a crap job at a gas station. I have a commercial pilots license and instructor ratings, but planes are expensive and require monies to stay current, as well as, profitable. A cdl class A would be my stepping stone of sorts to get back into a flying career. My main question is how much monies should I save to get my cdl? Currently have around $4500 saved and shooting for around 7k total for school and living exspenses. Do you think 7k is enough or should I save another grand or 2. Thank you for your advice and wisdom

I'd say squeeze rather than grind.
But 4500 will roughly cover school.
That would be expenses, not savings.

@rabbiporkchop, I am keeping the pilots license. I just need money to maintain currency with the faa. Hence the cdl for around a year or two

@Chinatown it is not the schooling that concerns me; mainly the financial aspect to be able to support myself during the training period for cdl.

Here's what I'd do; find the cheapest 160 hrs. school.
Then get started now instead of waiting any longer.
Some cdl schools have weekend classes or night classes so you can continue working your current job while attending cdl school.
Contact some trucking companies that reimburse tuition and ask if they will hire from that school.
This way, the money you spent on cdl school will be repaid to you in monthly installments.
