Oh. Great. If you can afford to pay for it yourself that is Positively the way to go. Shop around for the school that fits you best. Some schools are approved by some companies but not by others. If you know what company you want to work at, that will help you choose an approved school.
I guess this as good a place as any to start.

Not all mega's are bad experiences.
Those Tech schools are really good and also a cheap 160 hour school is ok.
CFI (www.cfidrive.com) is a large outfit, but the reputation is really good. Lots of Florida drivers work there and went through their in-house cdl school.
We can give you names of companies, then if you want, contact some companies and ask if they hire from those schools.
Abilene Motor Express - dry van & reefers (one of their trainers lives in Lake Wales)
Freymiller - www.drive4freymiller.com then click on "Recent Graduates" (tuition reimbursement)
CFI - www.cfidrive.com - dry van - tuition reimbursement
SRT - www.southernref.com - refrigerated coast to coast - up to $6K tuition reimbursement.
FFE (Frozen Food Express) - www.ffeinc.com terminals in Winterhaven & Miami - hires new cdl grads.
Want more names; let us know.FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -

@Chinatown I didn't even think about that one. CTS is like 15 minutes away from me. I buy parts for my truck there at their parts counter (Ford F750 with 33' race hauler). I'll have to give them a call, I sent a email to the lady that runs the CDL program at Hillsborough county community college to see what they have to offer. Tampa truck driving school is $4000 and really pushes you to go work for Stevens or US Xpress, I forget who the one in Lakeland pushes you to but there was someone that they want you to go work for. Roadmaster school at the fair grounds in East Tampa is like $6000 if I remember correctly. There is a school up in Jax that pushes you to go to Rohel but I haven't gotten any pricing from them yet. They sound confused when you tell them you will pay for school instead of signing a contract...I think they make more in kickbacks if you sign because two of them so far said "why pay for it yourself when a company will cover it for you" well let's see ... it's $1000 cheaper and I'm not bound to someone? Rohel actually looked pretty good from what I have read, haven't bothered talking to a recruiter yet because I really don't believe what they say. It's like UPS, they promise you the world but it takes YEARS to get it ..not saying it's all lies because I haven't made under 100k in like the last seven years, never paid for healthcare, and have a pension coming to me but when I was a bottom rate utility driver begging for two weeks of work a week......they dont tell you about that lol. Does anyone have any opinions on Roehl? I'm thinking they might be worth contacting.

Werner owns Roadmaster, so the push you to apply there.
That other school, Tampa Truck Driving School; between Stevens and US Express, I'd go with Stevens. Stevens lets solo drivers run coast to coast.
Either way, choose your first company carefully, so you can enjoy the road more.Last edited: Jun 1, 2019

Keep in mind; schools can push any companies they want to, but you make the final decision.

I'm on the east side of Florida fort Lauderdale area.
If you don't care about OTR I would pick a mega and get the CDL at no cost.
Me I don't want OTR so I have been trying to find something around here.
