I loved my state camp hot oil loads, I could get my 10 off while they unloaded.
I had a satelite phone so I could call in and have them have a trailer loaded so I could be back the next morning and sleep again. Before I bought the sat phone they would give the load to someone else, because, there was no way to know I would be back and ready.

Most I ever got from detention was $700 on a screwed up deal waiting on the Dulles Airport runway waiting for a plane to land all day, 14 hours.

I think $500 a day layover should be I guess fair being that I make that every day doing short runs less than 200 miles flatbed.
    A day's pay.

It all depends on how tuff are you and how good are you at negotiating. I find it best to communicate direct with shippers and receivers as much as possible.

Keep on trucking driver. I'm with you I was delivering a load using a crane to off load. It had all the warnings on rate sheet, phone calls, in route updates. If you're late 1k an Hour repeated multiple times. I get there crane is not scheduled for that day can't off loaded. Now that 1k is for my great fortune. Thank you I will pass go & collect my 1k. It applies both ways. It has worked for me quite often & no shame for the working man. Doing the majority of the work I'll take the majority of the pay. That is where we get short changed. All the best keep trucking

Yes and no. I haul a load a day atleast. Depending on the load the truck grosses $800-1600/day, every day 5 days a week. If I had to sit and miss a load, the truck would not make $ that day.

The point of charging a broker a full days rate because they screwed up is so that they dont keep doing it with the attitude of "oh well not my problem".

Most brokers are too chicken to try and get punitive detention or layover pay from their customer. Detention is not pure profit for a carrier. Most times it's a measly $300 or less for 24 hours. It causes chaos with the following schedule with losses of several hundreds or even thousands in missed opportunity for the carrier.

When detention isn't punitive what you have is a situation where nobody gives a #### because trucks time can easily be wasted and it only costs $300 or less. That's the way it is with trucking trucks' time is cheap.

It's very rare for someone to pay reasonable detention of $100+ an hour and/or a layover of $500+ and no carrier is getting rich off of rates like that. I hope this driver gets the $975. And of course as always sometimes the issue gets pressed and sometimes not. Depends on if the business overall is any good or if it is just a one off deal.

I love this thread but I have a question. How do you force a broker, or anybody else to pay that much?
I mean, I can say that they owe me $1000 a day but if it's not on the rate con, it doesn't exist.
On loading, I can understand. Pay me or I pull off but, once you're loaded and sitting at a receiver, what then?
I haul refrigerated and so pulling off a delivery sets up all kinds of additional headaches. Plus, my truck will be down for who knows how long until somebody gives in.
Please tell me the magic process to get these guys to pay because, right now, I am in the $300 a day range.
