What Would You Do? (Governor inequality in company trucks)

    Long story short:
    I have video proof that our company’s trucks are not governed at the same speed, despite official policy stating otherwise.
    What do I have to gain with my footage?



    Long version:

    I started noticing a few months ago that other company trucks at my company were passing me on flat ground going about 2-3 mph faster than me despite the fact that I was driving at company governor speed at 65mph.

    It’s happened about five times since the beginning of the year.

    I know from talking with two drivers driving this fast that they are indeed company drivers with company trucks. I confirmed with dispatchers that this is the case; and, using the truck numbers, found out that these were indeed company trucks. However, when I brought it up to the maintenance and safety managers they refused to believe me and insisted that all company trucks are governed at 65 mph. They also told me that it would require company codes to adjust the governor speed.

    Recently, I recorded a dash cam video of another company driver passing me on flat ground (about 3mph faster), even though I was flooring the accelerator pedal against governor speed. My dash cam stamps my odometer speed on the footage, so you can clearly tell I’m driving at the governor limit. I got on my CB radio and also later confirmed with an after hours dispatcher that it was a company truck. The driver openly told me on the CB that he is driving a new company truck and he could go 68 mph from day one on cruise control. My governor tops out (as does supposedly everyone else’s according to official company policy) at 65mph on cruise control and also with the pedal.

    I brought this up again with management and they still respond the same way as before. I am upset about the inequality, and lack of transparency.

    How can my company get away with this when their insurance company requires that everyone be governed at 65 mph? Or how could they be so oblivious?

    Especially since the onboard computers constantly register the odometer speed.

    I am not sure how to proceed with my dash cam footage. Of course I could put it on YouTube and show the whole world what a joke this company is. But truckers already know this industry is filled to the brim with B.S. and non-truckers instinctually assume it’s a cesspool.

    At this point I am not sure I even want to share the video footage with my company since they doubted me and acted like I was stepping on their toes when bringing this issue to their attention in the first place. Also, I don’t want to get the other driver in trouble, and of course I too would like my governor speed 3 mph faster. Obviously. But maintenance and safety assure this will not happen. Obviously.

    What do I have to gain by sharing the footage? With who?

    Who gives a #### dude . 68 or 65 it dont make a lick of difference at the end of the day. Both of yall is still gonna get ya doors blown off by anybody with a real truck. Focus on keeping it between the lines and the freight in back of the trailer. 3mph faster on a govenor aint gonna get u there faster

    Same thing at a company where I worked. Found out the computers on some trucks were governed slower, but were programmed to show going faster. In other words, a truck can be programed to run 64, but the speedometer will show 66.

    Are you serious? You video another truck and drop a dime on another driver just because he passed you? Jealousy is so ugly.

    Manly thing to do is take what you have and make the best of it. But, instead you take the path of the sidewalk sissy. Repugnant.

    Personally I think you should be driving instead of videoing, maybe show that video to your terminal manager so he can fire you for taking it while driving.

    I know our company has us at 68 and while everyone's trucks are the same, there are some subtle differences between the trucks. Mechanical differences happen, speedometer errors, tire wear differences, etc.

    My 2nd truck would touch 70 on the GPS. I could leave 10 min after other company trucks and beat them quite handily to our receiver.

    People don't realize that 2 or 3mph doesn't sound like much, but it can make a difference of almost an hour at the end of a driving day. For example, in a run we make from Dallas to a Memphis dock I could easily make it (if there was no construction or accident backup) in my 2nd truck without having to stop. The other company drivers had to take a 30. So I would arrive 35-40 min before they would, yet my truck was only 2mph faster.

    So that hour could make the difference between delivering that day or having to wait until the next. I know you feel shorted because you get passed but I don't guess it's a big deal. Just drive your truck and keep on keepin' on.
