The govt needs the money and it helps keep the bar of entry high and reduce competition.

If you read the publications, yes they want to ban the FET, BUT, they are also looking at other ways to recapture that money, whether it would higher road tax, additional fuel tax, reg. fees etc. I'm all for it going away, I just doubt it will be that simple.

The states would lose money also as state sales tax (in the states that have it) is charged on the excise tax.

After reading the article my take is. Dealers want to make more sales. Companies want to pay less per purchase. So to do this they want to spread thier "tax burden", among us all.
Not sure how I feel about that? I like the idea of not pay fet? Fet has always been ONE of the reasons I bought used.
But to make up for it, by paying more every day for everything else? Nah the least pain is keep the fet, because it is one and done.

The only new truck I’ve purchased that did not have full vehicle fet was my ‘79 Pete. At that time you paid fet on the tires only.
