The classiest carriers with the newest equipment and the best pay still lose drivers. It's just a part of the business.
Part of it is that drivers are in such high demand.
The biggest part though is that trucking can get to anyone after awhile. Given the right set of circumstances on the road, coupled with the right set of circumstances at home, there will come a day in every driver's career where they say, "To hell with it," and quit, no matter how good they have it.
Great pay, new trucks, free donuts, etc all make the job a little easier but still, one of these days, your best driver is going to be 1500 miles from home and get a call from his wife that the refrigerator just broke about the time that some forklift operator tells him, in indecipherable Spanglish, that his load is rejected and BOOM, you just lost a driver.
If anything, running a class operation will make it easier on you to replace that driver.Midwest Trucker, booley and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
It is easy to bring home 2500 or better a week here in the summer hauling gravel. I have watched this happen several years in a row. When we first start everybody shows up on time and at least acts like they will make a hand, by the time they get 3 checks, that starts slowing, by the fourth check, they will be late to work 3 days a week, and it progressively gets worse, until they flat do not show up a couple of days a week. I was surprised how many operated like this, making that kind of money. Then comes hunting season sept 1st, eve the owner of the company disappears for two weeks. lolbooley and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
There are Companies with low turnover. Good way to choose a Company, I used to look for a bunch of old Guys, usually a good indicater. True everyone had their breaking point, I’ve known quite a few who threw in the towel, despite being profitable. Just plain had enough, usually had paid everything off, sold out, and still drive part time. Funny how Trucking stays in their blood. Just can’t quit.

As a company schmuck, to me, money isn't all that matters. Yeah, I need to make good money, I have expenses just like anyone else.
But, I also want a company that's financially stable, decent equipment to work with, and a predictable schedule. When I got married and said 'I do', it wasn't to someone else's truck. And I'll be dammed if I'm letting a load of whatever dictate when I may see my wife. Been there, done it and almost got the divorce papers to prove it.
No, my boss doesn't have to be my best friend, I'd rather if they were an #######. That keeps everyone on their A-game. I dont need him or her to give me the shirt off their back. I just want them to tell me what I must do, and stay out of my way. And I'll never have a nannycam in my truck staring at me while I'm driving or picking my nose.Rideandrepair, Midwest Trucker, booley and 1 other person Thank this.
