Bingo, a lot of good that does you at midnight, and there's people waiting for your stuff on the other end, it gets kind of ugly. I delayed 5 drivers once because the "day guy" left me a flat tire, and no one to fix it. Pissed a lot of people off that night.
What's a day in the life of a local driver like?

I leave my house at 630pm, get the truck and usually loaded at the quarry by 730 pm. First stop is usually an hour away, spend an hour unloading. Then drive an hour to reload with cement. Then proceed to customer, which can be an hour or three of driving. 45 minutes to unload. Then an hour or three back to cement mill. Reload, deliver usually an hour and a half later. 45 minute unload, then head to the shop, which could be anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on where I'm at. Usually arrive at shop by 730, home at 800. Crawl in bed around noon, sleep to 5pm, and repeat.
I usually don't have to deal with anybody most nights. And if I get tired and need to nap, I do. There's rarely any appointments to meet, the loads are paid on percentage, so there's no real reason to hurry.
Yes, OTR was easier, I got more sleep. And I could eat whatever the heck I wanted, the wife wasn't there to yell at me -

Our runs aren't too bad, worst thing is the variable hours. Sometimes start at 12am, couple days later you start at 10am and get back late. Usually a 10 hr. day to a farm that's 2 to 4 hours away, couple hours to get loaded and then back and unloaded..

I start at 5 am and am usually home by 12:30-1:00 pm. I get paid 8 hours no matter how early I get done. Anything over 8 hours is time and a half.
I usually bust it in the morning to try to get done in under 8. Once it’s clear I’ll actually have to put in 8 hours (the horror. Lol), that’s when I’ll do all my odd jobs and work 9. 8 hours is worst case scenario for me. It’s either 7 or under- or 9 or over. There always plenty of things to do to justify some OT when I’m in the mood.
6 weeks vacation is pretty good to. This year I actually managed to get one every other month. First time I’ve been able to pull that off. Local isn’t all that bad. Depends on your area. -
4:30am, clock in, pick a load, grab keys, get tractor, hook trailer, PTI, etc. One stop delivery, back to yard, drop trailer.
8am, pick another load - move 3 trailers to another warehouse 5 miles away.
10am, pick another load - OR - POST-TI & clock out? Ahh heck, I’m feelin greedy. 2 stop, back to yard, drop trailer, POST-TI/fuel/paperwork.
1:45pm, click out, ride home.
2:20pm, arrive home, take doggies out. Cut grass, clean gutters.
5p, chillax.
7p, go to bed.Last edited: Jun 12, 2019
