The shortest route from now to your future is shortest if you know EXACTLY where you want to wind up. Find the company you want to work at and focus your efforts on getting the requirements that one company demands. 99% of newbies DO NOT focus, they hope and wait and flip a coin. Then they complain the industry is terrible. Don't do that. It won't work any better for you than it did for them. There are companies that are exactly what you want.
Just started, staying at Swift for only 1 year?

Where is your location; maybe can give you some ideas for local work after 12 mos.

Hang for the year, fulfill your contract then worry about it then. Driving jobs are easy enough to find, local or long haul, besides by then you will have been married a few months and may have decided you want to stay long haul FOREVER. lol

I have a different game plan in mind. I plan to get my CDL and drive for a local company (delivery) for a couple years, then move on to tankers/LTL/Food Svc, not 100% sure but that is my thought process. -
If you leave before that time you still owe Swift the remainder of the money, but no one is forcing you to stay.
The reason some people are saying stay for two years is that, during the second year Swift pays you back all that money at the same rate that you paid them. At the end of 2 years you will have paid nothing for your training.
It is a pretty good deal, in my opinion.
If you find a company to work for that will more than cover that, then go for it.
But there are many people that leave Swift for greener pastures only to realize that those pastures are actually very brown. -
I thought it was the other way around. You get the CDL free so to speak and you are not paying for anything out of your check.
I know some companies may have a lower staring pay rate and certain things like that but I didn't think you paid anything back unless you left before that year was up.
The only other thing is lets say you don't pay them back, do they put it on your credit report?
I am also pretty sure you can't use them as a reference either. -
Don't worry about it. Most employers will see you did a whole year at Swift and go, "I can work this guy like a dog and pay him #### and he'll love it"
So you'll definitely have employment opportunities after the one year.
