Solo Driving: Impossible To Make $?

    Hi all ... I'm looking at Stevens Transport for CDL school, and hopefully a job afterward. Part of the reason I like Stevens is they say you get to drive solo, which I would prefer. But people in this forum say that for the companies, the real money is in teams. Is it unrealistic to expect to drive solo?

    Look into Schneider, good training, and you can go solo.

    I make decent money, about $400 a week takehome (chump change to some, but twice what I made at my last job, so bugger off lol)

    If you can keep your misc expenses to $100 or less a week, you'll do just fine solo.

    Don't be discouraged by the low income I am posting here, once you get experience you'll make more per mile which can put that anywhere from $550 to $1500 a week, depending on miles and such. I am new, and only making $0.28/mile - short miles.

    Roehl pays practical miles, which is closer to what you actually drive, but they're a little harder to get into.

    lol, that's because simply.. It's the best place for new drivers to get a start. Stevens isn't too popular around here, if you do some checking I'm sure you will see many examples why. I can't say anything about them myself, but others can.

    I may work for SNI, but I know it's not for everyone, I did mention Roehl :smt033
    Roehl is another great option we hear nothing but good things about, though, like I said, it's hard to get in there.

    I have never worked for Schneider,but in saying that,I have alot of respect for those drivers,,they are almost all courteous out there. Also, they have many drivers that have started there and are still there many years later. They seem to always have plenty of freight and do not sit around the truck stops alot,unless on their break. They have nice late model equipment and maintainance system. i admit I hate that orange color,but really you can have pride driving there and if anybody else puts you down,just refer them to this site. I have respect for that company,unlike JB Hunts practices of stealing drivers and freight at the lowest possible rates,and screwing all of us. They hire the senior drivers for more cpm,but use them for themselves as an ad,they run the younger lowest cpm drivers and starve the higher paying drivers. i can attest to this,I have personally had those drivers tell me that and heard some in truckstops talking to dispatch asking for more miles like they were told when they started. Then the poor guy is telling his wife why he isn't making enough to pay the bills for his family. Good luck out there. Do your best and you'll do fine.

    It's strange, I use the pumpkin thing as a badge of honor!

    I have a stuffed jack-o-lantern that I intend to leave on the dash even after Halloween, just because it fits so well lol.

    The thing is, we take pride in who we work for because we don't fight with each other. We're always helping each other out, and giving advice, receiving advice, etc...

    SNI has a bunch of fringe benefits as well, things that aren't mentioned in brochures.

    -Big terminals (most of em lol) with plenty of space
    -Cafeterias at the terminals, so when you stop in you can have a hot meal.
    -Scheduling flexibility.
    -Cash advances if needed (Just be careful you don't use the paycheck before you get it, hehe)
    -Company store with option to pay with payroll deduct (if you're broke you can still buy laundry detergent, pens, etc..)

    Lots more I won't bother with, but all in all, I am very happy with the choice I made.

    Nah, I wanted a variety, I didn't get into this to do the same thing every day lol.

    They do have dedicated accounts though, ask the recruiter about it. You have to be near where the account is. Some are like line-haul where you run the same route every load, some are random routes, but home daily. Others are more like OTR, but you know what to expect every day.

    The danger of dedicated is that when you're getting paid so little per mile it's hard to make a decent amount of money. The miles are less on dedicated usually.

    is this really realistic on what a trucker makes the first year? i make that delivering newspapers 20 hours a week. how is it that recruiters get away with telling you you will make 40,000 your first year. 400 a week is 19,000.
    show me the money!!

    You should take home more than $400 a week!!!! It would not be worth the away time for only 400 a week.
