I'm looking at two trucks and I'm looking for some insight. The one truck is 1999 Int 9200 Eagle 51" sleeper single axle with a M11 with a 10spd and the other is a 1991 Pete 359 36" sleeper with a 3176 cat, 13spd single axle.

I've owned a 1995 T600 and a 1992 Volvo WIA before. My question is....do you think an older Pete is better than a little bit newer International?

Personally I lean toward Pete's over Internationals. In this case I think it would be what would be easier for you to work on. Pete stopped making the 359 in 1987...

Yes, that's what I thought about when they quit making the 359. This truck does have the big breather on the passenger side and little can on the drivers side and it does have a Cat motor. So I'm thinking 3406 (A or B) and somewhere around an 1987 model?

Anyway, same question applies. I like the Pete better but the Ineternational is newer. Also, I never have dealt with a 13spd too much.

if you don'tknow how to or are not will to work on it yourself every time your home buy newer.
87 was the last year for the 359. the air cleaners dont mean anything. make sure the last number of the vin isnt a G or its a glider kit

MedicineMan, if you get time I tried to post a link to it. Personally after looking at it it's either a 378/379 probably a 1991 with a 3176.

    it's a short hood 379

3176 is a medium duty motor. good motor but no powerhouse.

    Thanks MedicineMan!

The truck is for personal use (not for hire). I'm just not sure of the 13spd. I'm not pulling much weight and I'm guessing I could skip some of those gears.

As far as being a mechanic......I can parts change. Anything on the "outside of the block" I can handle. I couldn't inframe one...but I have a family member that could. Maybe 20,000 miles a year is about what I put on them.

Being a single axle I'm not sure of what kind of fuel mileage I would get out of that Cat (3176). My Detroits (Series 60) would get in the 7-10mpg range (65 mph .73 tranny).

After my WIA Volvo.....I swore I wouldn't have anything but a Pete/Kenworth again, but I need to do my homework.

    Thanks for the advice.

3176 will get at least that in fuel mileage. and be more reliable. it's a good motor.

13 is just like a ten, well a nine actually. you have LOW plus 4 gears on the bottom, lift the plunger to high range and 4 more gears on top but each of them you split by moving the switch on the side of the stick and letting off the fuel pedal for a second. it shifts itself. then you just put that witch back before you shift to the next gear and it automaticly goes back to low when you get to neutral with the stick.
I much prefer a 13 as you don't have t rev the motor up as much to make the next gear thus getting better guel mileage and reducing wear on the motor

    jcross Thanks this.

Depending on what you are going to be doing with, has a lot to do with your choice. The M-11 will be far cheaper to over haul. And you will get far better fuel mileage will the M-11. I have a single axle 9200 and am very happy with the truck. Avg. MPG is 9.2 Now thats running at 65. If I go faster the fuel MPG starts to come down. I pull a 48' flatbed with mine.
Now if you are going to pulling a race car or horse trailer and want some wow factor go with the Pete.

Killroy. I do pull my own horse trailer with it and I hate to say it....but looks kind of matter (without sounding like a fool).

The 9200's I'm looking at, look to be in real good shape and have some paperwork (dyno) with them. The Pete as you can see needs a little love....but at the end of the day it's a Pete.

I've owned a T600 before, sold it and that was one of the quietest trucks I've owned. 700,000 miles on it and I had to roll down the window to shut it. The WIA was a tough truck but rode like a dump truck, not very good lookin' (no offense meant), leaked oil and had blowby (Detroit 11.1).

So the decision for me is looks, fix it up to be dependable and cool looking or do nothing but turn the key over and drive the 9200.
