Paying cash for an older semi tractor vs. financing a new one

Finding one of those that's decent isn't the problem, not screaming like a little girl at the price is the problem.

 

The one's in good shape go for show truck money. I don't mind spending show truck money for a show truck. But i ain't spending show truck money for work truck condition. The last one i saw was 30k dollars higher than similar condition 379s with a documented freshly rebuilt 6nz. That's just stupid.

 

And what they want for those is ridiculous.

 

I found one for fun online for about 40k it was ok, it was a 2003 12.7L but overpriced as you said.

 

40 ain't a bad price at all if its in good shape. However it can't be an 03 unless it was built as a glider. Almost certain 2001 was the last year a detroit was available in a paccar truck.

 

Could have been, not to sure on year and I’m learning before I buy one.

Right now until wife graduates and finds a nice executive position job to support my diesel habit I can’t let California Go. So def truck it is.


Also wouldn’t mind a glider with a DD15 deleted.

 

You guys crack me up with those Peterbilts. To each his own but I've spent plenty of time in them, including owner operator trucks, and I just can't see the attraction. I didn't even find them to be comfortable. I guess you could say they hold their value, but then again you have to take out a mortgage to buy something ancient to hold its value... that seems funny to me.

I have a hard time parting out trucks that I like. A while back I had a Peterbilt that I parted out. I had no problem firing up the torch. It might as well have been a turd I flushed down the toilet. And the money the people paid me for those parts... Absolutely unbelievable and ridiculous.

Peterbilt reminds me of a gold digger wife. As bad as it is that one guy was such a fool to spend that much money on something so stupid, there's always another fool around the corner willing to dig into his pockets eager to take his turn.

Like I said, to each his own, but that is one truck that is not for me.

Not a single tear in the leather inside either. Working fridge, with a couch in the bunk. I even put wood floors down and even did the door of the fridge. I purchased it for $24,250 if I remember right. I probably spent roughly $10k fixing it up but I replaced just about everything. I bet I can sell it for a good chunk. However I’ll keep it as long as I can.
