It all depends on what Division you are applying for and what type Grocery or Foodservice. My Division is grocery and rarely hires other division are constantly hiring and giving out sign on bonus’s. If the division your looking at is constantly hiring there is a reason why. From my experience helping out at a handful of other divisions. The reason why they have a high turn over rate is because the trailer is loaded poorly and you can’t secure it properly (10k stop falling in the trailer) a lot of turning and burning and a lot of physical work. Or the division is poorly ran and the Admin have their heads where the sun doesn’t shine. Haha

If you do get hired you will start on the extra board and run the loads dispatch gives you. Everything in grocery is teamed unless it’s a local. There are three pay raises. You max out on your third year. You can get bid routes, but you should know how the routes pay first. I have one bid route and run extra board for the rest of the week. I don’t know how foodservice runs, but in grocery we run three loads a week. After your third load you don’t have to run for the rest of the week. Last bid I was averaging 16-1800 a week running three loads, but two of them were over 24 hours long. This bid I took one load and the rest of the week I’m on extra board. I’m now averaging 12-1500 a week, but I run three days and have 4 days off.

Pay at each division is different. Mine goes off a formula pay system. Three different pay rates for miles, weight, revenue, stops and sometimes cube. Other divisions get paid hourly and per scan (piece count). The money is there. If you don’t mind running a ramp and driving a truck in some really tight places. Benefits are really good McLane is owned by Warren Buffet, 401k is top notch.

Bottom line is that if your not afraid to work and are comfortable driving a truck with a sleeper pulling 53 or 48 into a gas station parking lot.

I was at McLane Carolina for 6.5 years. The formula was a bear to figure out if your pay was right. The pay was decent, but the trailers were always loaded poorly with a lot of product out of stop order. You would think with that high dollar conveyor system that everything was in the right order.
What really chafed me was the 5.0 game. They set the routes up so you couldn't run legal then do surprise inspections on the route. If they found you working while logged in the sleeper our division would put you on final warning.
Our trans manager, Danny Rimberg, aas pretty decent. He tried fighting for the drivers but the division VP was a worthless piece of work. Danny since moved to Temple and a former driver who knows the game is now the companies head of safety. You couldn't trust him as a driver.
I'm glad I left. Too many drivers who had been with the company 15+ years were hobbling around with ruined knees and shoulders.
