Stock "antenna" is built in to the aerodam scoop above your head.

    IT SUCKS.

Run your own coax and mount your own antenna.

The coax FL uses is pencil thin and cheap.. and they buy it from Squatsylvania on a 7mile long spool.

Ok. I'll give the stock a try just for comparison sake. What mount do you recommend?

Thanks for bumping that. I read all 23 pages of posts and now my head is spinning. I'm experiencing information overload. Your experience and knowledge of CB radio is far, far in excess of mine.

I don't want to mess about with all those extra accessories (amps, speakers, filters, etc.). Too much money and time and I wouldn't know what I was doing anyway. I'm not as serious about it as you appear to be, Slowmover. It's not a hobby for me.

I just want to be able to talk to people 3 to 4 miles away to find out what the hold ups are in traffic jams, hear about speed traps, etc.

With this in mind, what would you suggest?

Since you are going to use a cb radio for short range communication (like it was meant to be), I would try using the stock antenna and see if it meets your needs. As far as a radio, Uniden 68XL, Cobra 25, or Uniden 520XL should fit the bill just fine.

I'm getting the 29 LX. It's what I had before and I liked it. It's on sale at PFJ right now, too.

OK very good, just don’t rely on the SWR meter in those radios. You need to use an external one. My company bought two them and they were very inaccurate.

When I was in a 2016 cascadia it too had the integrated stock antenna in the roof, it did transmit and receive 3 to 4 miles, however the swr was in the high 2' s which is too high in my opinion. I then proceeded to use the Wilson mirror arm bracket ( sold in truck stops) installed a quality antenna mount, 18 ft of mini 8 coax, 5 ft top loaded antenna angled slightly forward, swr was around 1.5, and with 4 watt radio like the Cobra 29 transmit and receive range averaged between 5 and 15 miles. There are some brackets that are made with stainless steel that will be less prone to corrosion, but I used the Wilson for about 18 months and it held up well. Next time you are in a truck stop just take a look at some Cascadias ( numerous) and see how they have their' s installed.

Ok. Bought the 29 LX today and hooked it up. Again, integrated/stock antenna. The best radio check response I could get today was from a driver headed southbound on I-45 in Texas while I was northbound. He informed that he was at mile marker 263 while I was at 266, each of us +/- 0.5 miles for the time it took to get to the mile marker to read it. That's nothing to be ashamed of. He's behind me almost 3 miles with an antenna mounted into/near the front of my truck's front window?

I followed the user manual instructions to the letter on setting up SWR. While I acknowledge the poster reporting it is unreliable, it is still worth mentioning that it shows SWR at about 0.5 to 0.75 across channels 1, 20, and 40.

Further testing is required to verify distance. One single report is too small of a sample size to be reliable. Most of my attempts to range info today were unanswered.

I return to my truck Tuesday and will report back when I have more.
