Out of my class at Wilson only one student passed the driving portion of the test. One went home end of first week. Two failed driving test. That was in Springfield, MO. Their school didn’t live up to what I had heard and read about it.

It may not always be like that. The week we went Wilson’s was working on a take over or something and there were a couple of deaths various trainers and other staff were dealing with: family, not drivers. I thought it was the Jim Palmer side you were looking into? That’s a completely different facility with entirely different trainers. I watched a video of training there and was nothing like what we did (didn’t) do in Springfield. We literally bobtailed once each, except a vet who was there, then drove once with a trailer. The rest was backing and simulators. It seemed they trained vets far better than any of the rest of us. A little unfair to those who weren’t vets, but very good for vets.

I figured since they were sister companies, they would share training. But I don't like the idea of changing my DL to another state only to have to change it back to CA again later.Right now I signed up for construction classes at the college I attended so I don't loose my eligibility for my education plan being dormant too long and loose my funding while they see if I can change my career path. If they won't, I'll either get in a semester or 2 to finish my construction degree, or go to Swift. They're close enough that I can drive there daily (35-40mi each way) so I don't have to "pay" for housing or a bus if I fail. if I do that, I'll show up with my CLP to shave a week off the program.

It seems no matter who I decided on, I had to leave state for training: Missouri, Tennessee, Iowa, Texas, or Utah :biggrin_1square6: Honestly I probably should have went to Swift Academy in Tennessee. I’d most likely be driving now if I had.

I know people who went back to swift I don't know how much you need weekly, or what you need but swift with all its issues wasn't as bad some these other companies I rolled with. You can do better pay if you truly desire to pay more then anything UPS, FedEx, Old Dominion, Estes Express, Walmart, and superior carrier.
there's more but those my fav list recommend from people tell me it's good to pay.

Hi Six. It's 13 months at $37 per weekly pay period for tuition. The other half they credit instantly. Hotel is billed separate and is about the same dollar amount for six months.. no getting that back.

After 13 months, they start paying it back at $37 per pay period for a year. It's real, I should know.. month 14 here. There is not a contract, never was with Swift, unless something has changed.

Swift has over 35 terminals nationwide, so if you want to travel nationwide and do real OTR there are advantages, as in cheap under $50 hotels near most terminals. Hometime is allowed near any terminal as well.

Also, Swift has the most dedicated accounts with the likes of Wal-Mart, Target, etc if you are looking for more regional with 34 restarts each weekend as home time right out of the box. Not sure about Florida though.. I think Osceola (spelling?) is the main terminal out there.. would love to check it out some day..

IMO, stay away from reefer with any company.. It's a waiting game not worth playing.

Finally, the academy training is 3 weeks if you self study and obtain the CLP, 4 if you go in without the CLP.

Hope this helps. Also, if you do OTR as opposed to a dedicated account from the start, you'll get $3k bonus payed out $1k@ $250 weekly first month solo, another 1k at 30k miles, last 1k at $60k. Best of luck!

You didn't specify if you are a veteran or not. I was told the conditions you state are those of folks who do not qualify for the veteran's scholarship program. With the scholarship, they do not deduct any money from your check, although you basically have to work for them for one year, at which point you've fulfilled that obligation and the training was 'free'. Otherwise, it is like you stated, training fees are deducted for a year and then paid back over the next.
As for lodging, unsure in my specific case how that is going to end up working out. I have reasons (not just preferences) that I will need private accommodations as opposed sharing a room. So, I am figuring I may end up paying for my accommodations myself at the time I use them. I figure I'll probably end up finding and making those accommodations outside of Swift. I have concerns, for the same reasons, how circumstances will work while I am on a truck with a trainer. However, my recruiter is aware of all this (to include need for private room during training) and I think that will not be unsurmountable. I am not trying to 'special'. But, in this situation it is just something that has factored into the calculus of it all. BTW, those 'reasons' are real, justify the extra conditions and are also private and not to be shared on an open forum.

Sorry no. Get the program in writing. If they don't have it in writing maybe move on because it is complicated.

Yep! One of the invaluable things I've learned from reading on this site, make sure I get it in writing where it can be used in court if need be and take everything you hear from a recruiter with a hefty does of salt and skepticism!
