That's a good reason to do what I do. If they aren't in a hurry to get their equipment off my trailer, I'll drive it off myself. Combines are a different story but I still don't wait much.

So since you have a customer that holds you up without you getting fairly compensated you want the government to get involved?

    Unbelievable.

Well the companies aren't going to do it themselves, so yeah. We need to get some baseline regulations back in order, because it has been a capitalist gangbang since deregulation. :)

Do you want the government to set a minimum baseline rate per mile too?

Well, I'll disagree with you a bit on that.

As far as truck owners go, they don't want their rigs sitting because this represents an opportunity cost of lost revenue. Basically, when a truck sits at a dock (or anywhere else) it's not generating money (or the max revenue that could be made when the wheels are turning under a load).

That being said, sometimes it simply costs less to have a driver sit if he's in a bad freight area, too many trucks in that area, weather, economy, no weekend loads, etc. That's due to the ridiculous layover payments at most of these outfits: most guys rate layover pay AFTER the truck sits 24 hours and there's usually all kinds of strings attached to that pay.

I laugh when I hear these outfits at the ATA complaining about detention time after like 2-4 hours but don't say squat about their drivers sitting in the middle of nowhere over a weekend for no money.

To guys saying "Just go find another job that pays you for all your time" let's be real here: the vast majority of trucking jobs are irregular-route van OTR and most of those guys are gonna get the shaft one way or the other as far as sitting for no pay.

But everyone wanted deregulation. And how can we sit here and say we want the government involved in something they have no authority over, and then turn around and say that trucking has too many regulations?

There are plenty of places that pay detention and pay fairly for their driver’s time. If you or anyone else isn’t happy about their employment then find another place to work. The government has no place trying to force people to pay detention pay.

Your last paragraph.....van and reefer are the lowest barrier into this industry. If people want better pay then they can learn a different skill and pull a trailer that takes some training but offers higher pay. I have no sympathy for anyone that bounces from mega to mega and gets treated like dirt year after year.
