Thinking about becoming a truck driver after I graduate next year.

My son got his cdl in the US Navy SeaBee's.

 

Take a moment and think about this.
You are young, sure you have some education behind you, but you are not educated yet. You have been given the basics, the starting points. Now you get to go out and apply these basic skills, learn and hone those skills. Do it well enough, and you will be successful.
Should you not have plans to go into college or a vocational school. Military service is a good option. You will certainly get training and skills. The question is what will that be. No one I have met leaving any branch of the military has a CDL. They have had to get them as a civilian. They may have been trained to operate large vehicles, but no CDL.
This next part may, at first, sound a little out there.
Should you decide to enlist in any of the armed forces, make a career of it. Figure out what interests you, then take a look at what each service offers in that area. Go with the one that best fits you. Then do the 20 years or more and retire. You’ll be what, 40 years old. Time for a second career, doing what every you want. You will find that former military are in high demand

 

As people stated, join the military good idea, learn a trade in the military even better idea, finish college when you get out best idea.

Education and a trade is something you will love.


Driving a truck for a living? Not unless you have to. Before it was a career now its a must do for most of us to put food on the table.

 

Once upon a time it was a lifestyle. Now, the megas have turned it into just another job.

 

Check around locally to see if theirs any workforce(people that help to find a job) around. If so,see if they can send you to a local trucking school..i was forced to get my permit before leaving out of state for school..sounds cool but now im stuck with a ridiculous tuition. It’s ways to getting your cdl without selling yourself short. check around mate

 

If you want to serve then please do... Join what ever branch you want. Then ride that military career as far as it will take you... God knows I wish I had followed through with my decision to enlist... If I had I would be getting close to having my 20 in now. If after the military you still want to try trucking, then do so... But ride that military train as long as it will let you stay aboard.

 

This is the best advice.

Do your 20 years, then you can “enjoy” trucking.
But honestly I wouldn’t recommend this career to anyone, some might like it, but for most it’s a way to put food on the table.

 

Stick to being a Marine, it is safer.

 

Serve your country and proudly wear the uniform you earn.
Spend your 20 years there, get out and buy a truck.
