In my very honest opinion, you shouldn't even consider contacting him. Simple as that.

NO! Listen to what these guys are telling you. The only reason the guy wants to hire you is because you're a rookie and you don't know enough about the business to know when you're getting shafted.
Being a rookie isn't your fault. Everybody has to learn and we all started out not knowing anything.
You have the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and turn them into life lessons for yourself.
Keep looking for another job. Don't take any of that 1099 garbage.
If you work hard at it you'll find yourself a decent job.

IMO, this is more shady than an email from a Nigerian Prince. ALMOST every horror story I have read in this forum essentially comes down to "I climbed over a very tall fence that was covered in 'No Trespassing' signs, jumped across the moat surrounding the tiger cage. And was wondering if petting the big kitty is as fun as it sounds". It's your life, make sure to grab as much misery as possible.

An owner operator is a person who owns a truck and pays for the truck, the plates, maintenance, fuel, and some or all of the insurance .. That alone is about 12-14k per year. The plates are 2 grand.

Fuel is $200 a day. You need to make a grand every day to have any profit.

I guess I am not sure why this should automatically be dismissed. I have read the comments. Say he agreed to pay $100 an hour. I don't know what the going rate is for 1099 drivers. This is part time for now. Many are saying don't do it but are not providing actual reasons that I can see so far. As a contractor, what types of things do I have to watch out for? Yes no provided health insurance, so bump up hourly by $3 an hour assuming full time. Should I ask if this is a per diem? (Again this is local or local regional, no overnight)
One of my biggest concerns is that I am a new CDL holder, and so is the owner operator. I have never heard of new CDL grad being owner operator right out of the gate, usually it is with several years of experience first at least.

I am not the owner operator of the truck, he is, the guy offering the job. I should not have any expense other than food and possible lodging is my guess..I think.
