Hi forum,
I just completed CDL training and got my CDL A with endorsements. I would like some advice from those who have been around the block based on your experiences. I'm in my mid-thirties and I have young kids so looking to stay local. I would like to get into something that pays decent and has opportunities to make money as an owner op with two to three years of experience.
There seem to be jobs in construction, class B oil heat hauling, maybe some freight jobs that are local. Any thoughts on what would be a good direction to go in now as a newbie so that I have useful ($) experience that will pay off 2-3 years from now. Thanks in advance.
New Graduate in New England, career advice wanted.

then you have onsite fueling of equipment at constrution sites and trucking companies..Diesel Direct is one
but there are others. you work what ever shift you get. go fuel up your truck, go to your stops.
oil delivery, is the same, just different fuels at the tank farms.
average pay for class B jobs would be about $23 per hour, the onsite fueling companies DO HAVE class A tankers as well. -
Where are you in New England exactly; which city/town/nearest city?

I'm on the Rhode Island/Mass Border (Providence area) but willing to relocate to other areas in New England for the right opportunity.
Chinatown Thanks this. -
How about Gulf or Cumberland farms (whatever they call themselves now) out of providence......

Her's a union local job: If you have less than 1 year experience, you may be eligible for training.
- A Class A CDL with doubles/triples, tanker and HAZMAT endorsements are required.
Make more money! Wages are Teamster Union Scale which are greater than most other carriers! City Drivers also receive overtime pay after 8 hours/day.
- Be Home more often! Home time for ABF Freight drivers far exceeds that of other drivers within the truckload industry.
- Vast majority of ABF Freight local driving jobs are Monday through Friday.
- All drivers receive health and welfare benefits with no employee paid premiums.
Kingty9183 and Cat sdp Thank this. -

There is a lot of scrap hauling over there.
But there isnt enough freight for the number or available trucks.. The population density of new england consumes massive amounts of consumer goods hauled up from elsewhere, but the ever shrinking manufacturer base there does not put out enough loads to satisfy the number of empty trucks needing to leave after unloading.. Therefore the trucks are underbidding each other to haul back at less than cost, just to have a load. Theres also no truckstops, tons of tolls, crap roads, snow, high fuel and constant traffic. Im from mass.
If youre gonna relocate, leave new england. If youre gonna stay, look at end dumps.Last edited: Jul 18, 2019
