Fleetguard Coolant Test

    41183BBB-57D8-4D5F-AAEA-17980C5F63D1.jpeg So I bought this coolant test. I put in new low silicate coolant after I had my Horton fan clutch rebuilt. Anyways....... I put 5 gallons of concentrated coolant and the rest distilled water, and a 1/2 gallon of Penray(Pencool)3000.

    Here’s the catch, I think I have the chart they sent with the kit figured out but I think I’m a shy short of having the recommended SCA (nitrate), maybe a pint short. The recommendation is 3.0, I came is about 2.7. The strip in the picture has expired but posted it so you can have an idea.

    I have always maintained my truck beyond any recommend maintenance and services, and use nothing but the best(Over kill but peace of mind). I have to sell my truck by the end of 2019(thank you CARB), and I’m still taking care of it. Who ever ends up with this truck is gonna be more than satisfied.

    So finally after all the blah blah blah, what’s the opinion on my nitrate results ?

    Nah, the strip has a expiration “time” after you do the test. The “Molybdate” was row “1” at the time I took it, the nitrite was between “F” and “H” but according to the instructions, your supposed to use the lower one which’s “F”.

    I used to use those tests also, I stopped when I figured out the new OAT coolant Detroit recommends doesn’t have nitrite in it and the addition of standard SCA will mess up the new coolant. So with that said, does anywhere on a jug of the coolant you put in say OAT, nitrite free. Or does it say NOAT?

    Other than that, the bad closest to the chart is you free protection, middle pad is the molybdate and the pad closes to you finger is the nitrite. You read it by placing the pad over the white blocks so you can tell if it’s darker, lighter, or the same as the pads beside it, then use the appropriate row or column to see where your at. And then treat till your in the green and not above. So yes, you can have too much of a good thing!!

    So long as I’m on the green, I’m good...... ?

    From what my research and the instructions on the kit, i figured i was a little off. It’s only common sense if your in the green your good. But the green says “service”..... that’s what threw me off.

    I think the nitrate level is fine, maybe a little too much if anything.Looks more like H than F to me.Maybe a G? Too much is not good either,Better more than less. Doesn’t pencool have a suggested % for initial charge? It’s been a while,I always did mine, same way, using distilled, much cheaper. I started using Final charge.Although its low, not no nitrates. TSC has it for about $10 a gallon. Already has dca additive. Designed for use with a on demand filter. Instead I still check with strips.Never had to add any in 4 yrs.Doesnt pay to buy a lot of strips, as they have a short shelf life. It looks like you have plenty pencool, I’d leave it where it is. If in doubt, you can always add a charged filter, as insurance.
