Unordered product left on my truck by receiver, what can I do?

I had a freezer box full of cases of ice-cream sandwiches. Was told to throw it in a dumpster. Instead, I took it home; filled my freezer and gave the rest to relatives.
Lots of situations like that. Not allowed to donate it to homeless shelters or those mentally ill people will claim it made them sick and then you get sued. Keep it for yourself of dump it or give it to truckers at a truckstop.
That's one of those "wink,wink, nod, nod" issues no one talks about around the terminal.

 

had 6 cases of bar b q sauce left over once.....company didn't know what to do with it and wanted me to find a home for it..I left it on the trlr at the yard and took another trlrl

Years ago I was asked to take a load of skidder tires to a shop, they loaded up my truck, i chained the tires down and was off. Arriving at the shop I unchained the tires and they began to unload them. Then they asked me why I brought 17 not 16. I said to them I didn't load them, the tire shop did.
A call to the tire shop did no good they swore they only loaded 16. I asked what to do with the extra tire, no response. Nobody seemed to want it, so I took it home, left it lay out in the yard for about 6 months sure that someone would call looking for it oneday. Well after 6 months I asked the local tire shop how much they charge for that identical skidder tire, they gave me a price, and asked why. Told them the story, and I wanted a price because I planned to sell it on Craigslist for half price because apparently nobody wants it, and it is new. Tire shop owner said sell it to me, i will have my guys there in 30 minutes to pick up the tire. He was happy, I was happy, and 20 years later nobody has ever mentioned that extra tire to me.

Husband just had a load of 545 cases of turkey gravy mix in a kit that did not belong to the receiver. It ended up at a ABF freight place where it was off loaded. Don't know if it was going back to the shipper or what, street value was probably close to $14000.00 I figured, for someone to load wrong.

He had a load of watermelons rejected by Walmart due to box elder bugs, loaded hot by shipper. The went back to the same area 1500 miles away, but to another place to get rid of.

He had about 14 Butterball turkeys one time, but was not close enough to bring home. He got rid of those to other people in the area he was in.

Hate to see things go to waste, like dumpster if it is still good. He does have to call claims though and document the stuff and go from there with it. It is time consuming if nothing else, but in the case of charity, you know it is something that someone else can use.
