Starting from the bottom of the pay scale, which takes three years before you make top-pay, I’m very satisfied with my first year’s gross salary. I know there are some who are curious as to what LTL pays, so I thought I’d share what I made my first year at Estes, as a solo driver on the extraboard.

How many stops you average a workday?
And how big an area does a "normal" route cover?

Friend of mine has been at Estes 5 years and ran the first 3 on the extra board out of the STL (Fenton) terminal. He’d go all over on the extra board. He’d at times be up in NYC or out in Phoenix. He typically did a lot of OKC, Dallas, Memphis drops or some weeks he’d frequent western PA and the Ohio valley. But on extra board anything goes, whatever they need covered. He’s on a bid route now to Indy and back.

On an average day, you may get 2-3 stops. Sometimes it’s 4, sometimes it can be only 1. Depends on the amount of freight, and the distance that freight needs to be moved.

If you run a lot in the North East, you may stop at 4 terminals per day, or you may get a 600-mile straight run. It all depends.

A “normal” route depends on your area. For example, out of the Little Rock, AR terminal, I usually run to Memphis first. From there, they usually send me to Dallas, Nashville, Knoxville, Birmingham, Huntsville, Texarkana, or Atlanta.

If you’re in a small terminal, like Little Rock, you usually go to the larger terminal which has the most freight, then off from there to anywhere you have the time to reach.
