All of you have given good sound advice and I hope that you heed what is being told to you. Just my 2 cents worth, tell your husband to possibly look for some other type of career.

    angelicazaldiva,

Have you considered doing in home child care as a way for you to earn some extra cash? Your oldest two kids are in school most of the year, so you could take on 1-3 children at around $150 or so each per week. This additional income would take some of the stress off of your family’s financial situation until your cash flow improves.

If interested visit http://www.ccld.ca.gov/PG513.htm to learn about licensing requirements, etc.

You can usually get financing from a big company. Try Shipper's Choice, that;'s who
    I went through

I have friends that work regular jobs, and there wifes sell avon, ect, cut hair,or baby sit at home to contribute to the income to help out.I,m single truck driver with 6 + years making a good income, I would trade this job for a happy family anyday, and a 40 hr job. There is more downsides to this carrier than good if you are a family already. It will put alot tof stess on your relationship, most likley distroy your family too.my 2 cents

How long have you lived in Vallejo? I went to Springstown Jr High, and Vallejo Jr and Sr High.

That was in the mid-80's, it was a big Navy town then.

Sorry to be off topic but my post count is too low for a PM

I do appreciate all of your imput... a quick question.... My hubby and I were thinking that maybe he could get his CDL, and a year or so OTR. Then he would have experience to get a dedicated run or something? I have been doing a lot of job searching, in any field, and the only thing he has done ever is driving a 24' for furniture deliv. He doesnt have any other experience or education (other that his diploma) So taking his career in another direction is kinda a roadblock for us. Is this a realistic idea, or no? I've noticed that around my area there are a lot of dedicated jobs, but they require a min of 1 yr OTR experience...

Why doesn't everyone realize when production gets cut everywhere else freight drops and truckers hours and miles get drastically reduced . Show your husband this chart . http://www.bts.gov/xml/tsi/src/datadisp_table.xml
Freight has been dropping every month . All carriers have reduced their fleets . On the average OTR drivers are getting 20% less miles than last year . Carriers have cut starting pay and each large carrier has hundreds of applications on file . No one with a family to support should throw money away on truck driving school . The only reason carriers keep hiring is because people keep quitting because of low pay and poor working conditions .
You did a wise thing coming here for advice and to get some facts . You'll find plenty of posts by new CDL holders that can't find work .

How much is he making at his present job now? Our dock workers start out at 15 per hour and top out in 3 years at 25 per hour. They have a dock CDL position where you can work the dock and drive when needed. Until a Fulltime position opens up.

Theres a Terminal in Benicia, and in San Leandro. Also one in Santa Rosa, Or Lathrop.

Very hard to believe anyplace is hiring at that wage that doesn't have a huge backlog of applicants .
